Just before watching the hobbit we rented this fantastic blu ray.
FINALLY! Something worth watching. What a great movie that delivered on pretty much everything you want - out of a movie involving intelligent apes on a planet.
First the special effects are FANTASTIC. A serious marvel of what can be accomplished in effects nowadays. The many apes took up the majority of the movie - and it was all CGI - and you just do not notice it. Your disbelief is suspended! also all these apes had their wn personalties, you could tell who was who etc. A lot of the movie was in the rain and to say they got the rain and wet fur effects down pat was a real understatement. There were scenes, where I went - that's not real? And most of the movie, I couldn't tell where the CGI ended and the real sections began.
As for the story, it was pretty simple but it gets the job done. What really is interesting the tensions between the two main characters - Ceasar and Koba and the way the tribe reacts to it. Koba is the villain, but.....the thing is his motives for the majority of the movie....were the right thing. And I thought that was a brilliant part of the movie. Koba was right. The apes were in grave danger and if it didn't happen to be for the rare turn this movie took, it would have been terrible for the apes.
Where the movie starts - is also surprising. It doesn't start off right after rise of the planet of the apes. It actually occurs quite sometime later.
As for action, the movie also delivers. It's not just all about tension and acting. If you want apes jumping horses through flames while wielding dual guns, followed by driving a tank through a wall, this is your movie!
Whoooee!
All the apes have a sense of weight to them, and you can see their powerful stregnth with the way they move and jump. Very impressive.
The audio was also done VERY nicely. Very big drums were being used. It will give your speakers a work out.
The video picture quality also cannot be faulted with deep blacks, and a 16:9 presentation with no black bars to suck up your screen space.
Definitely a must watch movie - one that combines thoughtful drama, nice acting (on the part of the apes), and action scenes in a really nice manner.
