I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet but you have to graph the heck out of the system and then look at the graphs and let them tell you if it is good or bad. Or else let other people tell you if it is good or bad. Those are two common methods employed on most audio boards so I am surprised I am the first to mention them in this thread.

One where you spend as much or more time having to tinker with, reset, update firmware, et al, than you do using it for its intended purpose.

A bad system is one that doesn't immerse you in the performance, and doesn't leave you breathless and exhausted at the end of the LP (or CD).

If you turn counter clockwise a rock LP album on a turntable and you don't listening a satanic message, it's a bad system.

Frenchy you are bringing me back some memories about the Hotel California album being summed as a Satanic album when played backwards. I had completely forgotten that nonesense.

A bad system is one where the owner did not spend at least: 1. $800 for a power cord 2. At least 200$ / foot of speaker cable 3. 300$ / interconnect

Oh yeah, I see your point. I just got done listening to Tony Bennett and I thought he might not look or sound so good wearing lipstick. He's usually pretty stoned by time the lipstick comes out so he doesn't hold pitch too well. But, after a handful of Viagra and Ecstasy who would?

A bad system is...
One that doesn't cost as much as your friend's system One that doesn't have the latest, greatest, and most expensive room correction One that doesn't have more than 20 features you'll never use (but dammit, Bob's system has it!) One that doesn't use brand name electronics/speakers that have ads plastered all over the magazine you just read with the article telling you how great that product is One that geologist the next state over can't pick up the bass from One that your neighbors down the street can't hear

If you're referring to the rumble, snap, crackle, pop from the contact of diamond on vinyl, that's not background noise; that's ambiance.
Sincerely, /b

I like that! Just kidding around a bit (one of those moods today) I see we both have an AR turntable and an XMC-1....yours are in separate systems it appears? My AR has been retired for many years, but I just took it out in Oct. for one more session before putting the xmc into service. I no longer have an interest in records. Back to your original, most powered subwoofers have the slightest audibility at all times with no source material and at a low volume as you say. I have a Velodyne HGS 18 which is extremely quiet but can be heard very slightly if you go right up to it. Other than that I am dead quiet. As it's been stated here and around this forum, the noise floor of the XMC is extraordinary.

My turntable plugs into an XSP-1 Preamp and XPA-2 Amplifier; which can stand alone. They also provide the main L&R channels for the XMC-1 via HT-bypass.
Sincerely /b
