My Polk CS 20 is rated for 20-150 watts is the 200 watt XPA-3 going to be too much at reference?

Distortion kills speakers. What an amp is rated for will not.
How about telling us about the rest of the system including the room?

You should be fine.
BTW what do you consider reference level?

You should be fine with the XPA-3. You would need to run your CS 20 at ear bleeding levels to damage it. I had an older Polk cc speaker that was rated at 150W with the XPA-3 with no issues.

You will encounter no issues. However....your speakers can only play so loudly. So have some common sense. If it sounds like the sound is breaking up....back off a little.

myhometheater.homestead.com/splcalculator.htmlyou can use the above calculator to see how much spl you can get at your listening position with a given amount of power.. I had a cs20 a couple years ago and I also like to listen at reference... suffice it to say I no longer use polk to achieve this. But to answer your original question the xpa is not too much for the speaker I put 200 watts to the one I had without issue.

That didn't work. bootman I mean THX reference "0" I hope this new amp will improve the centers performance. thanks everyone That is 85dB at the listening position using a sound meter. THX specs say to add 20dB for peaks. Use those numbers as your target in the calculator.

To expect clean reference volume at listening position from that polk model is a little optimistic imo because of the limitations of the speaker. You need reasonably beefy speakers to get up there.

I am planning on changing the front 3 to something a little higher quality, any suggestions that wont break the bank?

Diy seos designs.. super high efficiency and they are supposed to sound great. A used set of JTR'S, also super high efficiency... and also sound great. Either of these can play CLEANLY and CLEARLY at reference.

Yep at the end of the day. Power, and speakers up to the task to making reference level will not be free. But It doesn't have to make you sell your soul to get it. I love the XPA 2 and the XPA 3 as the one two punch for knockout anything music, or movies. You pick the speaker. But I stick on guns of plenty of headroom, and control.

It's better to have more reserved power than not enough.
