I'm trying to hook one up just to try it out and I have read you can use an old receiver to power them instead of buying a dedicated amp. I have an old prologic laying around so decide to try it. I split my sub out signal from my main receiver and input the signal to the cd (or any other line level) input on the second receiver that powers the shakers, but nothing. However if I use the phono input they work. Is the sub pre out not just a line level output? Can a second receiver be used as an amp if you input a preout signal from another receiver? Anyone have any experience with these things?

Feed the split sub signal from the main receiver to the other receiver's analog input. Sending it to a CD input won't work. As you have found, using the phono input works because it is an analog input. You can use any analog input. Usually they're labeled "AUX" or similar.

Wow! That sounds like way too many moving parts.
Are you sure the sub pre output is actually engaged on the receiver, and secondly is there actual LF going to the shaker form the source material?
Have you though about buying a cheap sub amp from Parts Express (or the like) to power the shakers?

I was under the impression that all the rca line levels inputs are analog already, I'm not talking about the digital inputs but rather the red and white RCA inputs. I think the problem might be that the sub out level gain after EQ was run might have been set too low for analog to pick up and since phone input boost the signal somewhat it sound normal there. I can buy a cheap sub amp, I was just trying out this first and see if anybody had the same problem.
