My XPR 2 appears to be making creaking / cracking noises due to heat expansion. It's extremely well ventilated. Anyone experience this / have a suggestion for how to remedy?

Every once in a while people mention this about XPA amps. The solution seems to be to loosen the heat sinks so they can expand quietly. I don't believe I've heard this in reference to an XPR before, but I could be wrong. I'd call Emotiva and ask directly if I were you.

I have the XPA1 gen 2 mono-blocks and I have the same issue. I called Emotiva about a month ago and I was given the information about slightly turning a set of screws under the chassis in towards the back of the amp. I believe there are six screws maybe eight. I have been really busy at home and have not had the chance to physically address this issue. I intend to do so this week, but first I want to call Emotiva on Monday and find out about doing something more than just backing off a set of screws. My thoughts are to (one by one) take a screw out and replace the screw with the addition of a rubber or plastic washer and then moving along and follow the same procedure with the remaining screws. I was assured by Emotiva that the clicking issue is NOT harmful in anyway to the amplifier. While I like Emo's amplifiers and have read many of good reviews about there other products it does bother me to think that in the development of the XPA amps that this issue was undetected. With a lot of people complaining about the clicking sound it seems that it was not a fluk but rather a continuing problem.

My 2 XPR-1s have this problem. Loud bangs every so often. At times it would startle me while I would be listening to music. Like ocezam said call Emotiva. They have a partial solution. I agree with you it is a little disappointing. This is their Reference Line.

I have this issue with my XPA-1s. I've lightly loosened the screws on the underneath. I've opened up the case, and lightly loosened the screws to the heat sink bracing. It still happens but it is not as loud. I only notice it when the amp is at idle after playing. I will get one or two creaks within 10-20 minutes from both amps.

I've got a couple XPR-1s on their way to to me as we speak. Hope they don't do this, my XPA-1s don't, but my brothers do. Did you contact Emotiva about your XPR's? Their response?

I called Emotiva about this problem and they said loosening the six-eight screws underneath the chassis would eliminate the problem. In your case it seems to have failed however you stated that you opened the casing and loosen the heat sink bracing. This could have made the issue worst but I am not an engineer. My thought was to one by one remove the screw and add a rubber or plastic washer but I want to confirm this idea with tech support. You think Emo would have dealt better with this issue if there solution was not working like in your case.

I did call Emo Support, they told me to loosen the screws underneath, mostly just craking the tightness. You don't want to back them out. It helped but didn't eliminate it completely. If you have the problem when you receive your XPR-1s call Emo first, they'll tell you exactly which screws to loosen.

When I loosened the bottom screws, and tightened the inside brace it made the sound even louder, and it creaked a lot more times after being idle after playing. Luckily I do not notice, or hear the creaking when I'm actually playing music. If I did these amps would be long gone as I would not tolerate it. Now it is manageable and I can live with it. I cannot yes this as an absolute but I would not open any amplifier since that would be a good reason for Emotiva or any company to negate the warranty.

My XPR-2 also had creaking noises on warm up. After about 30 minutes, they stopped (mostly). My solution was to turn on the amplifier about 30 minutes before I planned on listening. I think that the heat sinks are the parts making the noise, but I didn't disassemble to investigate (the darn thing was WAY to heavy!). Since the warranty covers any problems, I'd ignore the creaking and assume it's part of the design.
My XPR-2 worked perfectly for the duration of my ownership without any problems from the thermal expansion. I predict yours will too.
Cheers - Boom

I initially noticed when I first put my XPR-2 in the home theater that it got rather warm. Being the heat exhaust freak that I am, I immediately worked out a fan exhaust setup that keeps the XPR-2 at a cool to the touch temperature, which is what I attribute my not ever hearing any of the creaking noises(expansion/contraction of heatsinks?) any of you are hearing. Just a thought.

FYI guys a lot of amps do this. My Pass Lab XA100.5's did this as well and they were $18,000 amps. Don't worry about it.

I think a surefire way to solve this would be to apply a light coating of thermal grease to all surfaces that come in contact with the heat sinks.

It'll dry up over time. I wish Emotiva would bring back the C-12 fan. I can't hear any expansion as the fan kicks in when the amp gets warm and keeps it cool to the touch; even after extended listening sessions.

I have the same problem but like some said by adding a fan, it will cold down the XPR-2 and it works. My question is that most Fan we could buy has no ON/OFF and could any one suggest me where to buy any fan with ON/OFF (small enough to put above the XPR-2 or near). I also notice that after half hour (I would rather say after one hour or so), the creaking goes away. Can any one explain that. Thank you

After a half hour, it is up to it's normal operating temperature, thus no further expansion.
One of my XPR-1's does it, but I leave them on 24/7, except for during thunderstorms. Since I only hear it on the rare occasion that I turn them off/on, it hasn't been worth it to me to flip a 100lb amp over on it's head and play with loosening and re-tightening the screws.

Not a peep out of my XPR-1s, even before I purchased a set of Sherbourn C-12 cooling fans. and, " come on man " it's only 99 lbs!!,,,,,,he,,,,,he,,,,,he,,,,,,
