I'm looking for a list of well recorded rock, classic rock, metal, hard rock, alternative, etc. This is just meant to be peoples opinions and suggestions, not really a place for debates. If there is an album that you think stands out in "sound quality" and falls in the general rock category post it here. All formats are welcome! Obviously this one is a no brainer. Dire Straits--Brothers in Arms (SACD) sounds great at even extreme volumes Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers--Americano Please pile on!

for cd's i would recommend '93 and down. '94 and up the dynamic range compression is getting increasingly annoying. if i just have to pick 1 cd with best sound quality i think i'll pick Pink Floyd - The Wall from Mobile Fidelity (MFSL UDCD 2-537). i just can't believe that cd can be this great sounding. very good mastering indeed.

If we're including "rock and alternative" here....
If you like the Grateful Dead, their album American Beauty has always been one of my all-time favorites. The original CD version (and the remaster) are quite well recorded... The MFSL version in Vinyl is excellent... And the new 24/192 remaster (HDTracks, etc) really does sound much better than the original... (if you like The Dead, the whole set of 24/192 studio remasters is really a worthwhile investment)
I am also very fond of Pat Benatar's In The Heat Of The Night. I've heard several versions of this that all sound excellent, and the new 24/192 remaster is very good, but I'm not sure it's a big enough step up to justify buying it again.
A few more all time favorites of mine that sound excellent are:
Heart - Dreamboat Annie Rush - 2112 Deep Purple - Who Do We Think We Are Blue Oyster Cult - Agents of Fortune
And, of course, Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (the 24/96 version on the Immersion Set is especially nice)
Also, just a thought.... always check out the MFSL or DCC Gold CD versions (where they exist). Both tend to be mastered somewhat differently than the "regular" versions - usually for the better.

Maybe someday....

(if you like The Dead, the whole set of 24/192 studio remasters is really a worthwhile investment) I really wish you hadn't said that. I already own them 2 times over, and in some cases, 3 or 4 times over. Buying them all over again would suck. My Ipod tells me I already have about 1600 Dead songs, so I think I'll just have to be pissed I don't have the best sound available. Good enough will have to do. I have the DVD-Audio versions of Working Man's Dead and American Beauty. Both are ridiculously good sounding. I've never heard so much "air." Probably the biggest "holy sh*t" moment I've ever had listening to a DVD-A or SACD. Doobie Brothers SACD's are fantastic. I especially like this one. www.musicdirect.com/p-1755-the-doobie-brothers-takin-it-to-the-streets-hybrid-sacd.aspxCoverdale-Page CD is very clear and open. There are more but I can't think of them right now.

If you like the old Alice In Chains the MTV Unplugged album is really really good, lots of good acoustic bass and guitar.

All the Elton John sacds sound great to my ears. The early Black Sabbath was well recorded as well.
