Delatdube,
Funny stuff. It's all relative I guess. If you can get away with buying it and not get sent out of the house to live with relatives, then do it.

Ok, so I have a debut carbon dc with a Ortofon 2m red cartridge. I have been listening to the cartridge now for a few months while not bad for a $99 one the IGD sometimes grates my ears. I love the sound though and really like analytical listening sessions. So long story short I have had my heart set on a 2M Bronze and even ordered one from a local dealer on Monday for a great price $325.00 turns out today they aren't authorized by Ortofon and could not come through. I called around and couldn't find one for less than $440.00. Finally I goy frustrated and called the needle dr. after comparing and discussing with the nice guy, I ordered the Ortofon Quintet Red for $314.00. Feeling guilty since it too uses the same stylus as the 2M Red I immediately called back and he made me a decent deal on the Quintet Blue for $499.00. My question is did I just make a huge mistake by spending more on the cartridge than the table? And what do you think I should expect from the cartridge? Please see my signature for system details. Thanks for listening. novisnick got me looking at turntables the more I look the more I going to spend .. so far im looking at this good starter turn table ? thing is I don't own a record yet.. That s a great table! Don't worry about the records as that is half the fun!

maybe this 5.1 is more in my price the dealer says its very good with expensive cartridges upto 1500 and comes with a ortofon bronze for only 1100 up in Canada .. just don't look very hot though.. but this 9.2 for only 2500 with the black 2m ortofon.. is starting to look good.. is it worth it..

To the OP:
I've had an Ortofon 2M Red, Blue, and Quintet Red. The Quintet Red was better than all of them in my opinion. I think you jumped the gun returning the Quintet Red for the Blue.

Though I will add, I only had the Quintet Red through 10hrs... I preferred it. But it was an MC vs MM too. So, many variants.

Fair enough, I just didn't want that nagging what if I.... in the back of my mind and since I had it I didn't want to buy twice.

Though the diamond tips were different styles, and the nude elliptical may be better for tracking... the biggest difference is the MM to MC jump! I will say, the Quintet Red had more forgiveness in actual flaws than the 2M Blue. I'm sure the Quintet Blue is even better than the red though!

It amazes me how expensive a needle (literally a needle) can get. I mean, it does not matter which way you look at it is still a tiny, brittle skinny needle.

Greetings all, the cartridge was delayed a bit but arrived yesterday with the heavier counterweight. First impressions with less than an hour on the cartridge. Install was easier with the square straight lines, IGD is better than the 2M Red. Has an airy presence with nice detail. The bass is laid back right now but according to the reviews this is normal during break-in. Currently I have it on the 100 ohm load which sounds the best so far, 470 ohms sounded good on the high end, but the bass was weaker. Didn't try 1k ohms. But did try 47 ohms and while it sounded ok the high end seems smothered. Bass is starting to open up more as I'm typing so can't wait to hear this cart come alive.

Bass seems shy on my Debut Carbon until I put some vibration isolation under the feet. I had some vibrapods laying around and used those, the bass came with that little tweak.

Thanks I would keep this in mind. I will say the table with my 2M Red was not bass shy. I will continue to break it in. Good thing is most reviews of the 2M blue and Quintet blue has mentioned what I am referring to.

Quick update. The bass is starting to warm up and along with the smoothness of the moving coil this cartridge is simply amazing. I'm starting to have that unconscious smile feeling that comes during critical listening moments that are impressive.
