Hi there,
Just wondering people's thoughts were regarding using a lineout to an amp that is designed to be to a recording device.
Stats on the line out: Rated RCA Output Level and Impedance 0.15 V/330 Ohms.
Would I need to use some sort of pre-amp or does it not really matter?
My receiver is an Onyko cr-n755 and the amp I ordered is the mini X to drive B&W 685 S2s
Thanks!

Most record outs are fixed level and wouldn't allow you to adjust the volume. Also 0.15 Volts aren't going to drive most amps to full output, this typically requires 1 to 2 Volts. So yes, you'd need some sort of preamp to increase the level and adjust the output.
Edit: Missed that you said the mini X, that would take care of adjusting the volume, but would still need more input voltage.

I use the XMC-1 record-out to drive a mini-x for my second zone. I chose record-out, instead of Zone2-out, because I wanted to use the mini-x volume control, so desired a constant level from the XMC. Plenty of loudness; rarely higher than 12 o'clock on the volume control.
Sincerely /blair

No, a phono preamp is designed for a much different impediance and has RIAA equalization. Since you've already ordered the mini-x I would try it and see if it gives you enough volume, if not any simple line level preamp would work.

That looks like it should do the trick, but I would still wait to see if you need it. Looking again at the specs of the mini-x it only needs 600 mV for full power (which is fairly low). The Onkyo may also put out a little more than spec'd. The preamp won't help the sound quality, only the volume, so using the 'less is more' premise, only get it if you can't get enough volume without it.
