Just received a new XPR-5 and XMC-1 this week. I hooked it up on Tuesday. I have used it to watch t.v. a few Blue-rays, and CD's during the week and today some Sacd's some vinyl and some standard cd's. I also ran DIRAC today. After shutting it off for a few hours today I played another CD through the balanced connections and was busy doing some things around the house so when the CD ended I left the system Idle for awhile. When I went to remove the disc after 20 min. or so the amp was displaying a solid row of red lights on the furthest right hand row and the standby was blinking. Answers before asked, amp was not hot, nothing hot near amp, plenty of ventilation, amp is all alone with nothing on or near it, was using two channel and not using that bank, speaker polarity good, cables good, dedicated 20 amp outlet, good solid 120 volts. Played more cd's and watched t.v. and watched a blu-ray tonight no problems since. I am new to Emotiva and this has me concerned.

Hi! Most likely you know all this but bears repeating in case you don't. Often, it's some sort of fault in the speaker cables. Sometimes the wires touch each other at the binding post or something. Other times, the XLR cable itself may be bad. Sometimes a fuse has broken. Now if it is not these thngs, you may want to give Emtotiva a call as it could be something more serious.

This occasionally happens with mine. Turning the xpr5 off and back on resolves it. It's going into protection mode for some reason. Since yours is so new and you're in the trial period, I'd definitely call emo Monday. Looks like you've covered all your bases already. But they might have something else for you to check.

You say yours does this on occasion. Does it do it on one channel, the same channel, or does it move around, or is it all channel's?

Well channel 5 for me also, I doubt that is a coincidence. Have you asked Emotiva about your issue and if so what was the response.

I did not. I'm the second owner of this amp and would need to send it in, which would mean no audio for me for the 2-3 weeks it would take them to look at it. Since I can resolve with a power cycle and it happens so infrequently, it wasn't worth it to me to call them. But for you, they may simply send you a replacement.

Today it did it again but this time it was channel 4 instead of channel 5 could it possibly be an issue from the XMC-1 to the amp? Also I spoke with tech support and was told I could always return it, not get it replaced but return it, not exactly what I was hoping to here to ease my fears.

I had this same situation when I first received my XPR-5. At the time, I only had the two main front speakers, and I moved the speaker connections from front channel to side channel, but after a while the red lights came back as side channels too. I did not have the XMC-1 at that time either, it was not released . The fix, of turning it on and off, is simple, but it is not the answer. I called Emotiva, and they asked me to move the speaker connections around, as I had done too. The truth is, my red light - shut down problem, just went away. I have not had this happen in more than 9 months, maybe a year . I forgot about this problem, until I read your message. Also , since getting the XMC- 1 back in October, I run the system all the time. Hardly ever shut down the XPR-5, and the XMC-1. Either movies, or TV, or music, all the time. I have no real solution to this problem, just that my red light situation just stopped. Also, my problem, when it was happening, did change channels, not always the same channel, because I only had the large front speakers, and moved them from the front, to the side channel connections, and they would red line / power down in either set of channels. I know I didn't help you, but you know you're not alone . I hope your problem goes away too.

sonicseeker, are you sure they didn't mean repair it? You always have the option to have them bench test the amp for a possible bad amp channel. Now if you are outside of the US this is a PITA. BTW are you using RCA or XLR? Does it happen on both inputs? I would swap cables first. You could have a slight short on one of the inputs. It happens.

Just to troubleshoot the cables, try a set of RCAs and see if the same issue happens again. Do you have a voltmeter? Maybe double check your grounds? I'm trying to think of all the things that might cause these amps to go into protect. (which may not be a bad thing if you find you actually have a fault condition) Good luck.

I got it back a week ago. It had a bad protection sensor on ch2. It got to the point where it would go into protection mode after 15 minutes of being on without any signal even being sent to it. Cost me $110 to send it in.
While it was gone, I got my hands on a Parasound A31 to demo. I must say I like the xpr5 better. Low end was more controlled, a fuller over all sound. The A31 bested the xpr5 in the highs. But to my ears, the xpr5 was the better overall amp.
