Hello all,
Hope the weekend finds you enjoying your selves with music, and the movies absolutely. I am a huge fan of great Headphone listening, and great Headphone stages you don't mortgage your house against.
A brief mini, review of the Schiit Audio Magni Uber. Using my AKG 701 Headphones. Also my somewhat so so JBL IEMs.
The Music and Schiit.
Playing Jazz and Rock. Well what do you get?
Surprise of surprises of my listening. The AKG's have bass, no really they do. Every other Headphone out I have used save the XMC-1, more on that later, has been an exercise in where is the beef???!!! Fretless bass, deep vocals were mostly absent in richness, and mid bass to low bass detail, or extension. The Magni brings it back in full force without being sloppy. Lows are what they are supposed to be. Uh there, in the listening. Midrange is not colored in the muddy direction because of it either by the way. The highs are a bit of a sheen for my taste, but are well extended, and accurate otherwise. Playing Clarinet for years, being around music ensembles allot, gave me some idea of what it should sound like. My poor playing abilities not withstanding.
Jason and Mike of Schiit packed allot in this little powerhouse of a headphone amp. The crazy large wart is so heavy it wants to come out of my wall outlet sometimes. Weighs more than the headphone amp. The tease is that this Magni is a baby Asgard. Not the Asgard 2 mind you. That is an "improved" kettle of fish so I am told. Have not listened to that yet, that is.
I hope to remedy that this April 18th, 2015 at the Music City Headphone get together in Spring Hill Tenn. Come on down. IT's free!!
I have had the Magni for a few months and listen to it everyday. Coming even out of my crappy "Smart" Phone, I am entertained reasonably. Now coming out of the Record out on the XMC-1, way better. Duh!
Sorry I have great contempt for all Smartphones as most do not sound very good when pressed with a great headphone. That was not on their bucket list of must haves. Navigation, Geiger counter, controlling your tv, controlling your house, and your life, and oh yeah, it's a phone too.
So the Magni is a low buck breath of fresh air. Giving my AKG's and me finally, a listen I look forward too after the day is done, and all the people around me are done doing their silly dance of their life.
Oh yes I did mention the XMC-1 headphone output. To that I say Great Job to Dan, and Lonnie, the XMC-1 is the processor of the decade period. Nothing better IMHO. The Headphone stage 1 – high quality headphone output (using TPA-6130) is exactly that. High quality. Great sound across the board. Do I like it better than the Schiit? In many ways I do, in some ways the same. The Headphone out on the XMC-1 is real good. Nice accurate timbres, and drives my AKG 701s' well. Plenty of oomph when I want to be listening to the orchestra maybe a little louder than I should, or rock on with ZEP, or ZZ top. I just never know where I'll go. Just not Rap okay?!
So in the end of my Sunday mini review of the maxi sounding Magni, I say a must buy if the bucks are short, and or you just plain want a great Headphone amp for the listen your headphones deserve to be driven on. For less than $150.00, the Magni Uber is killer, and will justify its keep. Like the mighty XMC-1, it is made in the U.S.A.!
Good friends do NOT let good friends listen to poor amplification of a mobile device, i.e. "Smart" Phone, when so much better amplification is around. Happy Sunday, and listening of your music, and movies.
