Day One Review as promised.
Let me simply write this: I will not be returning these surround speakers for a refund. If your surround sound system is a kiddie HTiB, you can look elsewhere. These speakers are for grown people.
Software in use for critic listenning:
CD's
Earth, Wind and Fire (All 'n All)
Natalie Cole (Still Unforgettable)
Take 6 (The Standard)
SACD's
Herbie Hancock (Head Hunters)
Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane (New Jazz)
DVD's
The Incredibles
Star Wars-The Empire Strikes Back
Blu-ray
Baraka
3:10 To Yuma
Eagle Eye
Audyssey program in my Integra DTC-9.8 came up a little short on the sides for my taste, but with a 3db left/3.5db right boost: The SPL problem was fixed. Now we're cookin' with gas ;D
The ERD-1's are nothing short of fantastic. If Emo's other speaker offerings are even close to their surrounds in SQ, they may need an even bigger building then the one they just moved into.
Track 4---Windmills Of Your Mind, by Take 6 is my favorite speaker torture test. These six guys sing without the aid of musical instruments and expose poorly made speakers right away. The ERD-1's are coming through with flying colors. The reason why I selected this particular song is because PLIIx Music Mode is not my primary choice for critical listenning when it comes to music, but I do enjoy the CODEC with certain musicians. Obviously, this would be one of the only ways to test side surrounds when it comes to music. Another reason why I selected this CD is the transfer. As you know, some disc really suck. This CD is one of the very best.
The Incredibles being THX optimized, and with the 80hz roll-off of the ERD's, made for a good test. Absolutely no distortion during the chapters that pretty much won this cartoon a Oscar. I can't give a better compliment then that.
7.1 CODEC from "3:10 To Yuma" has lost me a few friends over the last year when I advised them that their surround systems were no where near as good as they thought they were. Sorry if that sounds rude, but they asked and this is what I do for a living these days. Anyway; To be honest, I had never heard of Vance until Emotiva started marketing their speakers. I read up afterwards...and I know now...but I had never heard of the man. After listenning to the ERD's during this movie, I would gladly buy any speaker this guy designs sight unseen.
SACD's are another story. Direct radiating speakers will work better as surrounds in most cases, but the ERD's still sounded excellent. I'm not going to flip the switch in the back of the speakers every time I listen to multichannel audio, so I'm very satisfied with the trade off.
All and all: What a steal! I have installed many a surround speakers that have elevated system cost dramatically. None of them were better than the ERD's. Not only am I thrilled with my purchase, I would gladly advise anyone else to buy them. If you don't like these surround speakers, then you can't hear worth a damn so it won't matter what you buy.
