So, earlier this year I bought a 5th Gen. iPod Touch to use on my 2014 Star Stratoliner Deluxe (Motorcycle). The bike comes with the older 30 pin connector, so I bought the lightning to 30 pin adapter from Apple. Here's the issue: the adapter extra length makes it too long to fit inside the cubby-hole in my fairing that holds the unit, thus making it useless unless I want to do modifications to my fairing, which I don't...
Soooo... I really don't need another MP3 player (I already use a Sony unit that works and sounds wonderful), so I want to re-purpose the iPod. I was hoping I could use it as a internet streaming device (For Tidal, perhaps) and connect it to my XDA-2. Is there an available dock with digital outputs that would facilitate this? My internet search has been somewhat inconclusive.

Get an airport express, stream to it wirelessly from your ipad, and connect it to your dac via toslink. I just looked online at the Airport Express and see a connector they list as an "Analog/Optical Audio Jack" But I don't see how a Toslink cable can connect to it. What am I missing?

Monoprice product number 2671. Ah! I never knew there was a mini Toslink. Hell, I just received the first Toslink cables I've ever owned just 4 days ago. Thanks for the help!

Get an airport express, stream to it wirelessly from your ipad, and connect it to your dac via toslink. The question I have, and pardon my ignorance, how does this work with streaming through the iPod with a service like Tidal? I can see this setup as a DLNA like server, but not for using the digital out of the iPod directly into the DAC. How does the Airport Express know to send out a digital audio stream? Couldn't I use a Lighting to USB connector directly into the DAC?

Cogito, you can look into the Pure i20 ipod dock as well. Amazon, Staples and a few others carry them. They sell for under $100 and they do a great job. www.amazon.com/Pure-i-20-30-Pin-iPhone-Speaker/dp/B0049MOK92 Amazon link I have them set up with all of my XDA-2's to run my ipod touch players. They work great to digitally stream from your ipod to your home stereo. I use Pandora, Tune In Radio and a host of other streaming apps for some really good audio quality. No need for adapters or anything. Plug and Play! The dock offers optical toslink and coaxial plus regular RCA's. Here is their site with all the info you need. www.pure.com/product/i-20-vl-61429/

The Airport Express sends out an analog signal if you plug in a 3.5 mm cable, it sends a digital signal if you plug in a TOSLink connector. I believe the problem with going directly to the DAC would be 'drivers'.

It only comes with the older 30 pin type. The lightning to 30 pin adapter is notorious for incompatibility, so not really an option.

I wonder if the iPod is "smart" enough to know to bypass the internal DAC when it's linked wirelessly or to an Toslink adapter? Then again, I may be clueless as this is my FIRST Apple product.

I would think the 30 pin to lightning would work on this though.

I will first say that I've personally never owned an iPod, but I have used iPhones and iPads with the AirPort Express and Apple TV. If it will connect to the AE wirelessly then it will be a digital wireless connection. At that point it's up to the AE to send out the correct signal and if you hook up a TOSLink cable it will be digital, meaning the XDA-2 will be the DAC. Post your iPod model here and see if someone knows if it will hook up to an AE, if no one here knows ask over at the Apple support forum. All iPhones and iPads will do what I describe, it's called Airplay. Edit: I see in your first post you say iPod Touch 5th Gen, I'm 99.99% sure it will do Airplay.

I'm going to give it a try .( getting tired of looking at this airport express sitting idle next to me ) Next time if you could type a little slower . I'm going to give it a try also on my Harley Electric Glide Classic. ( the legend ) two tone metal flake red , Vance & Hines super ovals ( very quiet ) etc etc Could never understand guys with stupid loud pipes. all it does is annoy people and destroys hearing in the process all because of a myth that loud pipes saves lives. . . Kinda like secretaries day for aftermarket pipe mfg's. . All made up nonsense. ( will somebody please pull this soapbox from under me . I'm getting on my own nerves )

Get an airport express, stream to it wirelessly from your iPod touch using Airpaly, and connect it to your dac via toslink. Must I repeat myself? Well, it only took something like 2 1/2 years to finally take your advise and connect my iPod Touch to my XDA-2 via an Airport Express wireless router and I appreciate your help. Setting up, I only experienced a couple snags in my endeavor. First, I had to deal with a "double NAT" (Network Address Translation) as I was using two wireless networks (Belkin and the Airport Express) which was causing SOME of my wireless devices not to be able to access the internet through either of the routers (Very strange). My "old" laptop worked as well as my iPod, but my Windows phone, 2 iPhones and new laptop could see the internet on either of the routers. Yes, they could see the network but said there wasn't any internet. With a couple minutes of research, this issue was solved by running the Airport Express in "Bridged" mode. The other issue, after getting everything hooked up and set up hardware wise, the Airport Express STILL refused to send a signal to the DAC. Pretty frustrating... The directions online kept referencing turning on Airplay in iTunes. I could not find any such setting in the software. In frustration, I ask my 15 y/o daughter (A devoted iPhone user) about this issue, explaining everything I had done and what was NOT happening. After about five minutes of explaining stuff, I mentioned something about turning on Airplay in iTunes. She says, "Oh, why didn't you mention that first?" and in a couple swipe of the iPod, Airplay was activated! One side effect of this whole ordeal is that I have a HUGE wiring mess on my stereo rack. Cable box, cable modem, VOIP modem, my main router, Airport Express and a HDMI switch and all the CAT5, HDMI, Coax (Why does coax have to be so thick and stiff? ), Toslink and power cables! UGH!!!! Every power outlet is utilized and it kinda looks like hell LOL. All is good now and now I'm listening to some Alice Cooper on Slacker Radio while reclining on my comfy leather sofa! Life is good!
