I was able to tour Michigan State University's Audio Enthusiasts and Engineers lab the other day and saw something interesting and fun. This is a link to their photo gallery. aeemsu.com/gallery/#lightbox[auto_group1]/6/The first photo you see is the subwoofer. It's a cube standing on one "corner", using six 8" drivers. The three pointing downward are active and the three pointing upwards are passive. I forget what the stated efficiency is but their test wattage is one amp. The cube was paired with a couple bookshelf speakers and there was no real balance between them. The sub was much louder than the bookshelf's. But that did allow me to hear the sub pretty much by itself and it was doing a very decent job of handling the upper end. I was told that it was handling up to 100 hz at the time. They gave me a thumbs up for working with their speaker group to explore the feasiblity of dismantling one of my NHT subs and putting it's components and Sunfire amp inside one of these cubes, still using the NHT external control box and seeing if it all can be made to work properly. Should be fun, but a long term project since I can barely find enough time to cut my lawn anymore. I should be able to meet with them when the summer semester starts in about three weeks.

Reminds me of the Lange D12A, only smaller.

Elemental Designs also made something similar, the eD D1 Dodecasub. Attachments:

GO WHITE!
And I love how the Dodecasub looks. I really want to proceed with this project just for the sheer sake of fooling around with something utterly unnecessary! I have two major issues with the plan though, first, I have no place to put the thing if it were successfully built, and second, I really like how my system sounds right now. It would seem to be an easy decision to make, but strangely it isn't...

Interesting videos on the Michigan State website! Might be interesting to visit there. DM
