Setup:
Denon x4000
Emotiva XPA-5
Klipsch rf82
Klipsch rc62mkii
Klipsch rs52mkii
Earthquakesound Supernova MKVI-15
Cheap Focal rca-interconnects
Sources:
XBMC/Kodi (movies/flac/mp3),
ps3(bluray),
tablet/phone via dlna/airplay (mp3/aac/flac)
I bought myself a xpa-5 in search of more control in the bass area. And it sure did not dissapoint!
Listening to music, or watching movies, the sound stage widened even more. There is more air between sounds and a lot more detail is revealed. Its like details
now have their own details. The bass is even tighter and a lot more punch-like. Harshness in sound at high volumes are gone. It just feels like the amplifier has
a unlimited power reserve.
Don't get me wrong. The x4000 is not a particular weak amplifier, it just cant compete with the raw unrestricted power of the Emotiva amp.
Most people say you don't need much power to drive Klipsch speakers. Well, that might be true. But that does not mean that RF-82 speakers doesn't perform better
when you feed them more power. This is true even at low volume.
A light car will run faster with a small engine than a heavy car with the same engine. But it will run even faster with a big engine. Just saying.
Regarding the noise issues some complain about. I can hear some noise if i put my ear close to the speaker. Its not audible at in my couch 2-3 meters away. I do
get some hum from the amplifier transformer itself but that is most likely issues from power outlet as it affects the subwoofer too which also has a big torodial
transformer.
I also got some hum in one channel but that was due to a powercable which was too close/parallel with the rca cable. When i rearranged the cables the hum went away.
What's next? Well, I will try to replace the cheap rca-cables with a bit more expensive cables. I was to suppose to buy emotiva XRCA cables with the amplifier,
but 0,5m is to short. I need 1,0 m so I've ordere myself In-Akustik NF202 cables for the amp and sub. I've always wanted to figure out for myself how big the difference
is between expensive and cheap cables. I'm expecting very little difference...
Shipping:
-Extremly fast. Ordered a monday. Thursday same week the amplifier was picked up by fedex. Wednesday week after it got delivered to me at work in the North of
Norway. That means 6 days half a cross the earth!
Was it worth the price?
-Considering the the final price for me including shipping+insurance+taxes was roughly $1718 (1 US=7.8 NOK), YES!
Yet another happy customer,
