Im using my Oppo 103 for cd playback going through my Marantz 7702 processor. I currently only use the HDMI outputs on my Oppo. I've read in a few forums that for two channel, it's best to use the analog ouputs on the Oppo? Any input on that? Thanks for any info!

For stereo 2.1 music I prefer the analogue output of the 103 to a USP-1 compared to the digital output to a UMC-200. Although I prefer the analogue output of an ERC-3 over the 103.
If your Marantz does analogue bass management then I'd suggest that the analogue output of the 103 would be my choice.
But if your Marantz doesn't do analogue bass management then you really have no choice but to use the digital output of the 103. As it makes no sense to do a DAC in the 103 then an ADC in the Marantz for bass management than another DAC for output to the power amps.
Cheers Gary

I will check on whether or not the 7702 does analog bass management.

Also, it is easy to hook up both ways and switch between them to see which one sounds best in your setup.

Hi smfins - Mr. Gary Cook is correct. The analog output of the Oppo is fine unless your Marantz re-digitizes the signal for bass management (and I suspect that it does). If that's the case, then you want to run a digital Oppo output to the Marantz and let the processor do the D-A conversion and the bass management. Cordially - Boom

Cordially - Boom When you say Digital are you referring to an optical cable or the HDMI? Also, what about the "direct" mode? I always thought direct would just pass the signal straight through? I know I need to read up on the 7702, but just wondering if there is an easy answer.

it will come down to which DAC sounds better to you, the 103 or the 7702. if your marantz is anything like my 5507, there is a setting in the analog section that says allow the sub-woofer or don't allow the sub-woofer during analog playback. i always playback my 2 channel as 2.0 because my speakers can handle the low end for music. i also use the Direct setting on my pre-amp with the "don't allow the sub-woofer" set in the analog setup.
of course, it was said that you can connect both the HDMI & the analog up at the same time to your marantz and switch back and forth between them; that might be the best way to determine which DAC you prefer. best of luck, keep us posted.

If you use the 7.1 direct channel inputs you should be able to pass the Marantz's internal DACs. You'll need to use 'pure direct' - this bypasses all processing according to the manual. See page 139 in your manual for details. This is how my SR5008 works - your's should be no different as these are very similar units.

Connect the OPPO 103 to the UPA-200 VIA CD analog out. Your crossovers will remain the same as always in the UPA-200. I run mine in this manner and it is only a one button push on the remote to switch from HDMI to CD analog. I always use this for 2.1 channel listening whether CD or Pandora, etc. You may notice a slight increase in volume so if you do your SPL tone test make sure to switch back to HDMI or your main speakers will measure louder than the others.
Works for me!
Correction: Sorry I got on the UPA-200 track and realized you are using the MARANTZ instead. But BTW as a MARANTZ fan I use this same technique with both.
