Hi drumsgregTo answer your question - YES - The XPA-2 will do a fine job with any Magneplanar speaker. I've run 1.6 Maggies and it sounded great. I've also run Thiel 3.5 and 1.6 speakers with the XPA-2 and they sounded awesome as well. Don't worry - Be happy! You'll be well pleased. Cordially - Boomzilla

Just go to the Magnepan website and it tells you how you can hook it up. I am sure you can us te XPA-2 for both.

Well this isn't as clear cut as expected. The amp has to run both the DWM and the maggies at the same time. So it does require a reasonably special type of amp. I think the XPA-2 should do. The cnet article mentioned it has to be good at low impedance loads.

That's what I want to know... Will it handle the load?

Hey, Drums, I've been contemplating this precise question except with XPA-1s. I have 1.7s. I believe the XPA-2 (and XPA-1s) are "high current" amps and can handle the parallel connection as in the DWM instructions. The Magnepan site tells you that most high current amps can handle the load as long as the 4 ohm output is approximately double the 8 ohm output. One other item - the Maggie site mentions that if you do not like the DWM you can return it within 30 days. Let us know how it does!

The XPA-2 can handle both 4 and 2 ohm loads. How well it does 2 ohm loads is another question which I don't know.

One quick point... the 1.7i (recent 2015 model) are NOT MMG's. They are a full range speaker, and I would NOT use the diagram for the SUPER MMG connection.
IF you are planning to use the 2nd diagram for connection, the XPA-2 should be able to handle with no problems.
From the webpage: "DWMs are designed with dual, interlaced sets of 'voice coils' so that the DWM can be run either as a two-channel or single-channel woofer. When measured in isolation, the DWM's bass extends only to about 40Hz" .... the 1.7i is supposed to hit 40 Hz by itself, and they then mention that some magic happens and there is some re-inforcement of the lower Hz...
"I wound up using two DWMs with our 3.7i's, using beefy Magnepan-supplied 1400 mH inductors to roll-off unwanted and unnecessary mid-bass, while taking advantage of the extra low-bass power and extension the DWMs provided. The results were well and truly spectacular, yielding very low-frequency (think mid-20Hz) weight and authority, yet without muddying the inherently transparent sound of the 3.7i in any way."
Personally, I skipped the DWM and went to full subs. I have a pair of PSA S1500 running with my 1.7i speakers for Home Theater. I also have the ability to run the Speakers directly from an XPS-1 and have only the Mag 1.7 for stereo from that system. I have a B&W 750 Sub attached with these as well. The crossover is around 80 for the sub and the Mag 1.7. I find this a very pleasing Stereo only sounds as well.
I will be interested in your results with them DWM, but feel other subs (PSA, Rythmic,SVS) work as well and are self powered. Eliminating the additional wiring.
In Stereo mode, with each 1.7i powered by a XPA-1, I very seldom see over 4-5 lights on the amp when running at very high levels. Normal listening will not bulge the XPA-1 into showing any lights at all. I hooked my XPA-2 up to the 1.7i for a while, and the amp never had issues or any strain with playing the speakers.
Good luck with you choice.

Thanks guys for the replays and info... Got my eye on a used one. I have a Rythmik F-12... But for my set up I want more of that Magnepan bass... Not deeper ... But more of that Magnepan speed and clarity in the low end. Just wanted to make sure the amp would do it. I don't play loud. The 1.7i are very good, they just need a little help in the low end.

I ran Maggie's with my XPA-2. Ran a treat. I loved it allot. The XPA-2 is a great amp for Maggie's.
