As an early birthday present to myself I decided to upgrade my subwoofer and get an SVS SB13 Ultra sub to replace my 10 year old Kenwook HTiB sub. The old Kenwood sub could produce some good volumes, but it was a bit boomy and muddy. I imagine the SVS will totally outshine my current sub. My general question is weather it would be better to just take out the old sub and let the SVS ultra shine, or use both in a dual mono sub configuration. My room is open on the left and at the rear. Basic dimensions of the room are 17 x 28, so I'm sure the SVS will be able to fill the room with sound.
I plan on doing the "sub Crawl" to see where the optimal position for the new sub will be. And who doesn't like to play with Dirac ?!?
Just looking for options and ideas on what will sound the best. Thanks for the opinions and suggestions.

The Kenwood HTIB sub will not be able to keep up with the SVS and if anything will detract from the experience. I'd use the SVS by itself.

Definitely DON'T keep using the old Kenwood sub. First, I doubt that a sub that came with a HTIB can even make enough output to make a significant contribution to the SVS. Second, since you already said that the Kenwood was somewhat boomy and muddy, if it does make an audible contribution, it will simply degrade the sound quality of the SVS anyway. (If the Kenwood is ported, you could try blocking the port with a piece of hard foam - which might suppress some of the boominess at the expense of lowering the output. Cheap subs usually sound boomy because they're understuffed and overtuned. If that works, it might be good enough to use in a second smaller system somewhere. ) As an early birthday present to myself I decided to upgrade my subwoofer and get an SVS SB13 Ultra sub to replace my 10 year old Kenwook HTiB sub. You said it yourself - the Kenwood is "boomy and muddy." All that will do is detract from the excellence of the SVS. It's like if you wear a brass ring and decide to get a 24 karat gold ring and you wear them both on the same hand. Pearls and swine don't go together.

I would enjoy your new SVS SB13 Ultra. Save up for another if you want to run dual Subwoofers. As a thought, SVS does have a discount program on dual subwoofer purchases. Great Subwoofer that SB13 Ultra. Loving mine. I might someday go to dual but I am in great shape for now.
It is best if you can to run the same subwoofers in multiples.

I have plans to give my old sub away to a buddy so it will find an OK home. I was just wondering if keeping it would help in any way. It seems that my first thought of scrapping the old sub is the way to go. Thanks for the suggestions.
New sub should be home tomorrow!

I have added the ultra sb13 to my system and have loved it buuuuuut? It is almost too polite, I have a sun fire that is the dual 10 and it is still in my system because I still like a little "boom" which I guess some would call mud, that the svs just doesn't produce, don't get me wrong it is an amazing sub but almost too well mannered

I have however heard the SB13 and in my opinion absolutely great for music.

If your old sub was boomy and muddy and you probably also could hear it's localization.... Yeah you're gonna love your new SVS, and won't give that old unit that is going to your buddy a second thought. I had a similar situation where I had a smaller sub that was a lil boomy and muddy since I was living in a condo at the time and didn't want to be on a first name basis withe the local authorities lol. In the new house I made the switch to SVS, and I've been loving every second of it. That old sub is sitting down in the basement all lonely.
