After reading the responses to my first post, I was again trying to set up my SR-120. I have the cable HDMI hooked up and I wanted to put it into NEO:6.
It had been in NEO:6 before with no problem, but when I power the system down, it comes up in stereo the next time I turn it on.
This time it won't go into NEO:6 - when I put the cursor onto NEO:6, its extended menu pops up with its various options, but I can no longer get the cursor over there, either by pressing Enter, or by arrowing over.
I reset the SR-120 to factory default, but it acts the same. I shut it down, unplugged it, and shut down and unplugged the cable box. I put the HDMI cable into a different input and fired everything back up - it acted the same: it wouldn't allow NEO:6 to be selected.
My DVD player (HDMI) CAN be set to NEO:6
Why would the SR-120 have stopped allowing NEO-6 for cable?
Couple of things to mention:
1. The SR-120 is new/unused. 2. I am a home theatre newbie.
TY

If I had to guess I'd suspect that whatever the stream coming in from whatever channel you happen to be on doesn't allow NEO6 to be applied to it. Are you able to change channels and have NEO6 able to be applied to some of them - or can it never be applied to any channel? Also, if you reset everything to factory default, you'll have to reset your preferences again (page 20) for each input. Did you forget to redo that? I don't have a 120, only a copy of the manual - and I have to confess it's not a very complete manual in explaining a lot of the features - especially for a newbie. Sorry for your struggle, but chances are it's some kind of owner error or confusion on how it should work. By the way, what is your setup? a 5.1, a 7.1, stereo?

I agree with moovtune on retracing your steps. I just set up my fourth SR-120 this week in my basement den and these fellas are a little quirky. I have never run anything in NEO 6 so I cannot comment specifically on that but I know my SR will not accept every mode on every channel. In fact through my Comcast HD box pretty much every channel will run via PLIIx yet when CNN is on it will not play audio. I have to adjust the mode to DDEX to get it in sync. Weird and quirky at times but when it is set it sounds great. On my recent set up the volume seemed muted as far as SPL at the level on the volume dial when compared to listening levels on my other SR's. I realized the Dolby volume was off on the unit from the previous owner and once I switched it on it made all the difference in the world. Today I am going to wall mount some new speakers for height and surround backs. Sounds like fun.....not! In case you don't have the manual. cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0172/4516/t/9/assets/sr_120_manual_v2.pdf

I guess NEO6 isn't an issue after all: it is working fine on the Dolby setting, in which it has been starting itself. It is a 5.1 system. TY so much for your reply! -Mark

And as you seem to be familiar with this unit, maybe you can tell me how can I get it to remember my preferences. Fer instance: I set the subwoofer level up one notch, but after turning the system off and back on, it is back to 0dB. I was hoping there was a way to save different configurations, such as having the center channel and rear surrounds off when I play a CD, but on when I play a DVD. Do you know how to make it retain such settings? I wish I had a basement! TY, -Mark

You have to go into the calibration mode to make a change like the subwoofer level you mentioned, then save the change. Adjusting levels outside of the calibration mode are temporary and on power down it will go back to the calibration setting. To play a CD without center or surrounds you use "Stereo" or "Direct" mode.

Hey Mark, like moovtune says you have to program your settings in the speaker set up screen. Once you adjust the levels, be sure to hit enter before exiting that screen to keep your settings.
For the second question I don't know of anywhere you can program the receiver to eliminate the center and surrounds outside of the "Stereo" setting. If the CD is recorded in two channel, this will be reflected if you use "Direct" mode like he said.
You can also fine tune the way you hear TV compared to CD playback by using the manual EQ's. There are three EQ levels you can program in to reflect how you want the music or dvd playback. More bass, less bass, more mid range for voices in movies, etc. Good luck!~
