Hello, my friend is finishing his basement dedicated 7.1 HT room with the following audio components: Fronts: Polk RTiA9 Center: CSiA6 Surrounds & Rear: F/XiA6 Receiver: Denon AVR-X3100W Sub: SVS PB-2000
We are thinking to use XPA-5 amp to power the 5 speakers and to use Denon receiver to power the rear surrounds. Other idea is to use XPA-7 for all speakers. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello my friend!!! A few questions please; What % of two channel listening to HT would you say? What size room are you working with? Acoustic treatment, any? Budget?
This will get you solid answers. 8)

100% will be movies/HD content from Cable. Room size is 25 x 18 No acoustic treatments right away, but we plan to add them Budget is around $2500 for amplifier(s)

XPA-5 is my vote, the sale price is a really great value right now and it is a great amp, I am on my third one haha cause I'm a dummy for selling the first one and then I went to powered speakers for a bit when I sold my Gen2 XPA-5.

Xpa7. Those polks will really appreciate the bigger power supply and more power during times when they need it. I owned those Polk towers and ran them with an xpr2. They took everything the amp could give.

I say go with the XPA-5 and use the rest of the budget for room treatments.

The only reason I can see for going with the XPA-7 is if your friend thinks he might go with a pre-pro instead of a receiver down the road.

Or he may someday start listening to two channel in which he would want a set of MONOBLOCKS!! Its been more then a few times people have started with HT only and grew and expanded to love two channel music. Why hey stop at just one pleasure? Yea just never know.

Either go with the XPA-7 and enjoy all the extra dynamic headroom on all channels.....which leans towards a more dedicated pre-amp down the road with less overall expenditures (because a dedicated separate amp is more than likely going to be the gateway drug to a dedicated pre-amp). Or get the XPA-5 and run the surrounds off of what you got, then later maybe get some monoblocks for the left and right channel, or a 2 channel amp.... But consider that all joking aside....a separate amp will more than likely lead to a separate dedicated pre-amp.
