I am currently using an onkyo tx-nr838 as my reciever. I'm running a 5.1 setup. My front soundstage is powered by three UPA 1's and the surrounds are being powered by the onkyo. Would it be worth getting another amp for my surrounds and purchasing a UMC 200? Would I notice a difference in sound quality? I realize I would lose networking capability, but I can use my amazon fire box for most of that.

I replaced my Onkyo TX-NR709 with a UMC-200 a couple of years ago, and the sound quality increase was unquestionable. I loved my UMC-200 and am still kicking myself for letting it go to fund an XMC-1. In my opinion the UMC-200 is probably the best value on the market. I'm not sure what Emotiva is cooking up, but I think that discontinuing the UMC-200 without a direct replacement in their line up was a HUGE mistake.
There are very little bells and whistles with the UMC, I sold mine with the also discontinued bluetooth module that allowed me to stream music from iTunes or Pandora through the UMC.
Seriously man, I can't stress it enough how awesome the UMC-200 is. With that said, to get its full value you need to be a tinkerer. I was NOT impressed with EMO-Q (Emotivas proprietary room correction software). Once I ran REW, I was BLOWN AWAY.
My vote: DO IT

I like my UMC200 and I am a picky prick. I change equipment often and have kept it in a review system for a year now

Yep seems to be a trend here but going from just for sound quality from my Onkyo 707 to Emotiva XDA-1 and USP-1, yeah I get they're different. Wow yeah it is an eye opener. Running now the XMC-1 and Stealths. I'll never go back to an AVR.

I'll add my two cents. If you plan on investing in a MiniDSP UMIK-1 and using it with Room EQ Wizard(link below), then a UMC-200 is a no-brainer. The UMC-200's P-EQ feature alone is a very powerful feature, so go for it, you won't be sorry.

A definite yes. I recently replaced my Yamaha rx-V2400 with the UMC-200 mated to an outlaw power amp. I run oppo player 7.1 analog inputs to utilize the oppo's DAC's. I like the flexibility and the definite increase in SQ using any input I choose. Much better than the Yamaha setup I enjoyed for many years.
