I'm looking for your inputs in helping me select the best near field system. Appreciate your inputs.
I love my primary 2 channel system : XDA-2, ERC-2, XSP-1, XPA-1L X 2, Tekton Pendragon, Scout 1.1 w/ 2M Black, dbx II
My current office base system is: Mac Mini , Dragonfly dac, Focal XS book. I work from home and am at my desk about 10 hours a day of which music is being streamed at least for half that time - usually quiet. And every now and then I'll take the volume up to enjoy the sound.
I am looking to build an awesome near field system to replace the present one. Thanks to excellent advice from another Lounge member I had almost decided on the Airmotiv 6S plus the DC-1. I also do not currently use the X-Ref 12 and plan to integrate it into the near field system. I also plan to do is buy a VPI Traveller and add that to the mix using an XPS that I already have. The split between digital and TT based music will be 80:20.
My budget is 2000$ (plus another 500 if needed + TT cost). Is there is combination that you would recommend across all brands. The speakers would be about 6 ft apart and listening distance is about 4-5 ft from each speaker.
Thanks.

There's a used pair of Stealth 6's on the Emporium; they would be worth a look-

How about a Emotiva Mini-X A DC-1 and a pair of Kef LS50.

My 20 cents worth, DC-1 + SP-1 + Airmotive 6's.
Cheers Gary

Focal makes powered monitors at various prices up to ones that include beryllium tweeters. If you have a Guitar Center or other music or pro audio store nearby you could probably audition them. The other suggestions all look good too.

Very happy with my Geek Out DAC into a pair of Airmotive 6's plus a Polk PSW505 sub. The Geek will handle DSD files as well as PCM up to 384/32.

Thanks. What about any passive speakers that you'd suggest maybe with DC1 and Mini X amp ?

For near field speakers, some of the best I've ever heard are Klein + Hummel monitors. They are now under the name of Neumann and you should be able to get a pair of KH120A in your price range or close to it I believe. I know there are some other top brands like Adams, Genelec, and Focal (as previously mentioned) but I find the H&K's have a certain magical quality about them. I haven't heard the 120's but my friend has a pair higher up the ladder and they always blow me away when I listen to them. The only other set of monitors that give me the same sort of reaction were a 5.1 Genelec setup in a recording studio worth $150,000/speaker so that doesn't quite count haha.
Edit: I'd really recommend going to a proper music store and audition some of the monitors they have hooked up to see what you like. There is a chance you may not like studio monitors as a speaker as they are made to reveal weaknesses in recordings and accuracy when mixing.

Has anybody listened to the B&W 685? Is there a way to compare it to the Airmotivs in SQ?

I liked the 685 when listened to it quite awhile ago, I own 683s and 603s. GoldenEar Aons are nice too and are worth auditioning if you can. The Aons use a similar tweeter Airmotivs.

I really love my near field system with minix, Schitt modi and NHT classic 3's. The accoustic suspension design of the NHTs makes them easy to place near a wall. If you want to spend more, add a DC-1.

Man, those are expensive.

Has anybody listened to the B&W 685? Is there a way to compare it to the Airmotivs in SQ? Listen to the 685 at work frequently. I would take my Stealth 6 any day over them. Airmotiv 6 should be very similar to my Stealth. Stealths sound effortless in comparison, and much more detailed.

The KEF LS-50 is the BEST near field monitor, IMHO.

So you want something that outdoes your current setup? I don't know if the choices presented here will provide you with a worthwile $2000 upgrade for your money. However they will all sound good.
