Hello, I've got a BMC PureDac for my headphone near my computer (using HD800 for headphone) bmc-audio.de/index.php/PureDAC-EN.htmlIt has a 2 channel output to an external amp or powered speakers. I was toying with the idea of adding and xpa-2 and buy some full range speakers. Of course, space would be an issue as it's difficult to put 2 tower speakers near the computer table. (doable in a future home, but hard to get the wife approval factor). Please I think tower speakers should be 6-8 feet away from the listening level anyways? So if tower speakers is not viable or possible, I'm looking at Airmotiv 6. But my headphone amp/dac doesn't output subwoofer signal. It just does 2 channel output. So my question is, can I run Airmotiv 6 without a subwoofer? My plan is to connect computer > dac > airmotiv 6 for now. Any inputs please? Thanks

IMHO ALL speakers require a subwoofer.

I run the Airmotive 6's on my PC system with a subwoofer. It's simply wired in parallel with the 6's, using a pair of Y cables. Both the 6's and the sub receive the full range signal. The sub, however, is set to roll off above 80Hz. They are driven by a Geek Out USB DAC.
The Airmotiv 6's have a decent bottom end without the sub, but the sub fills in nicely down to 30Hz.

maybe I should connect the LR to the subwoofer, and use the subwoofer's LR channels to connect to the Airmotiv 6?

If your music listening preferences demand low frequency then a sub is mandatory in my view. If this is the case then there's no need for Airmotive 6's when Airmotive 4's will do the job just fine.
If your listening preference are not so low frequency demanding then Airmotive 6's on their own (no sub required) would be my choice.
Cheers Gary

I would recommend This Subwoofer with the Airmotiv 6s. Small footprint, and a great match for the Airmotiv 6s. Also with the line level pass through, you can connect the Subwoofer, and the the Airmotivs' effortlessly from your system. www.svsound.com/subwoofers/cylinder/pc-2000

If you have the cash I would suggest you get two subwoofers. There is plenty of literature that supports the benefits of running dual stereo subs for stereo playback no ifs or buts about it!!!

Some vendors like SVS have dual Subwoofer discounted pricing too!

I think your question is will it sound like I'm missing tons without the sub. Sort of like...why am I listening to this without a sub? The answer is no. However a sub with most speakers can greatly enhance the sound.

I have Airmotiv 4s and 5s, depending on the room layout and size you will be fine without a sub. In my 11x11 dining room they both dig very deep considering and I feel no need to add a sub. In my larger living room, different story. I would get the 6s and see what you think without the sub, then consider whether it's worth the added money and integration.

maybe I should connect the LR to the subwoofer, and use the subwoofer's LR channels to connect to the Airmotiv 6? Yes, if the sub has line out jacks, like the SVS vcautokid suggested, that would be the neater solution. My sub does not have those, so the wiring is a little more complicated. Same result though.

Keep in mind that even if you have one Sub only, you can still run Stereo with summed audio.

I have Airmotiv 4s at the office (thanks Glenn!) and at the office I do not miss the bass. Now I would at home, where I expect the bottom end to be substantial, but at work, the little 4s take care of me in the nearfield.

I have the Stealth 6, which are the closest thing to the Airmotiv 6s. They are fine by themselves without a sub for 90% of music and most movies. You'll need a sub for anything with deep bass... electronica, rap, and movie LFE. What sub you'll need will depend on the size of your room. I have a single SVS SB-2000 and it works fine with the Stealth 6. I don't even bother turning it on most of the time since I'm usually just listening to background music while doing stuff on the PC.
Since your DAC has both XLR and RCA output, I would get a set of XLR for the monitors and use the RCA output for the sub. That is what I'm doing with the Emotiva DC-1 DAC since that keeps the signal digital until it goes to the speakers. Using the PC's internal audio will also work in a pinch but results may vary depending on the level of the motherboard. I only use Asus Republic of Gamer boards and the audio quality is exceptional for built-in audio without adding a dedicated DSP.
