Lightning fried my Toshiba laptop (Win 7) used as my JRiver music server. I've just installed JRiver for Mac (version 20). I've hooked up my external HDD to the Macbook Pro, authorized my JRiver install, and imported the library. So far so good.
On the Toshiba, I could "see" both my Oppo BDP-105 and my Apple Airport Express (V1) as potential DNLA receivers. I could choose either at will & switch back & forth. On the Mac, I see neither. I have enabled "Generic DNLA" which is what I used on the Toshiba, but neither device shows up on my Audio tab as being available.
My system runs the music server in a back bedroom of the house, out of 802.11 range of the living room. Therefore, I use "ethernet over AC" by HP to provide an ethernet connection to the living room (where the audio system resides). I know that the ethernet and the Airport Express (providing 802.11 in the living room) are working because I can log onto my cable internet connection (located in the back bedroom) via laptop in the living room.
Despite the connection (that worked perfectly before), the JRiver on the Mac won't see the Oppo or the APE.
What am I missing?
If this isn't solvable, plan B is to run a Dell netbook with Win 7 in the living room, doing away with the need for DNLA completely. The Dell is small enough to communicate directly to my DAC of choice via either USB, ethernet, or TOSLINK.
garbulky assures me that a netbook is sufficiently powerful to be an audio server, but the last time I tried (a few years ago) the thing consistently had gaps in the music stream because its mediocre processor and CPU-intensive Windoze OS left not enough horsepower to stream music (via ethernet OR via USB).
Constructive suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks kindly - Boomzilla
