For gaming I think a Behringer UCA 202 for $30 would do nicely. Now it doesn't have any fancy hardware spatial processing or anything. But it is a nice cheap DAC You will need y cables and a passive attenuator. The passive attenuator like the control freak would add a bit to the price. However if you don't want to mess with all the cables, an audioquest dragonfly 1.2 is an excellent choice. I've heard it and it sounds really good (within its price range). You could also give Emotiva's new portable little eGO DAC a go as well. However I haven't heard it. I wouldn't spend a ton of money on the DAC if all it's used for is gaming only. I game and a DAC does improve the sound quality in games (somewhat). You can hear the background music better. The sound effects are also less irritating in the long run.

Parts Express for a sub solution on the cheap. I bought 2 10in B stock for my brother. Paid $150 shipped. Sound pretty good for very little investment.

Woot has a Klipsch SW 110 that will outperform the Dayton 1200 in SQ and responsiveness.
I know for a fact, cause I own one of each.
The Klipsch is $229.00 I think, it sold new for a lot more when it was introduced. Dayton 1200 puts out nice volume as well but the Klipsch is more responsive.
Klipsch for music Dayton for HT
Now it's up to you,,,,,,,,,or something else. Good luck with your search.

Newegg just had the Klipsch KSW12 for $169 two days back. Fry's had the Reference 12 for $229 earlier this week too. Some nice deals to be had if you look!
