OK guys, if someone asks you to recommend the best system with a $1200 budget that includes a 7.1 or 5.1 speaker setup, a Blue ray player and receiver, what would you say?

Let's be honest, without a little luck in finding deals he may have to sacrifice or purchase in steps.
First, I would tell him to keep an eye out for a used Sherbourn SR-120 (does that make me bias?) or a Fusion (heard good things). I have found three of the SR-120's used on the forum and Ebay for around $400 apiece.....which would be more receiver than most will need.
Next I suggest a Panasonic or Samsung Bluray player new which run under $100 in most cases.
That should leave him about half to hunt down an Ebay deal on a speaker and sub combo or personally I would watch for "Deals of the day" at places like Newegg, Fry's and Best Buy for the speakers and subs that frequently pass through as specials....really good specials. Several packages with five speakers and sub with a name brand like JBL, Infinity, Pioneer, Klipsch, etc come up in these at fantastic prices. It can be done!

Like teaman said, the speaker will have to come from a package deal. An integrated receiver comes to my mind, unfortunately the sherbourn and fusion are discontinued so the used market will be a must. For a player probably a cheap one but reliable, maybe a used older oppo.

It is tough, but I would tell them to save their money. Ultimately it will cost them more in the long run as they replace components and upgrade. The money would be better off saved and put towards a system they could keep and be happy with. The other option is to start out with a 2 channel system and grow it as the funds become available. I doubt you will find many, if anyone, here who put together their system on a single purchase. These types of systems are acquired over time.

With deals like the Sherbourn PT7020C4's that have been floating around at $115 or less brand new, some posters of UPA-500's for around $300 and a nice selection of Bluray players under $100 I would think it would be easy peasy to scoop up a set of five speakers and a sub for the remainder of the money. I have picked up a few pair of Klipsch SB-3's that will rock the room for under $100 a pair, highly rated Pioneers sell for about $129 a pair as well. To find a decent starter sub may be the biggest challenge, although Fry's just offered a Klipsch Reference 12 sub two days ago for $199. Hard to beat that... Heck....Chad may even part with one of his four PT's. Have a little faith!

The guy is using a 12 x 20 room, only one entrance, and there's a door so he can close, a sofa, love seat, 65 inch tv, fish tank, he doesn't want to spend more than $1200.

What do you think of the ideas posted to this point....something he would be interested in? www.accessories4less.com/ has options to build a decent system for under the budget he seeks.

What is the destination zip code, in case someone has a set of speakers and other components to sell which they do not want to ship?

From personal experience: The reason he is asking YOUR advice and not the guys at best buy is for something unique that you can give him. What he is looking for at the price point is best handled by the guys at best buy and you should advice him of that. Because your expertise cannot help him any better than the guys at best buy. They'll get him some cheap polks and a cheap reciever and a rather poor excuse for a sub and he'll be happy as a clam. However if you can convince him that more speakers at the price range equals sh*ttier sound and that two channel may give him the way to go. Then your experience comes in OF USE to him and to you. Then Get him A mini-X + Mini-Lore www.tektondesign.com/lore-m.html+ DC-1. Get the mini-x used and the DC-1 used as well to cut down on costs. Another option is a set of airmotiv 6s and a Dc-1. The left over money can get him a cheap sub. Maybe a Mirage sub. Get him a reasonably cheap blu ray player. Sony has one for about $90. Done. P.S.: This setup will completely own those energy speakers or any semi- HTIB unit he gets.

Hmm, This is interesting. Our Hobby is always an evolving hobby. That being said, I think you have to weigh what the Playback sources will really be. Do you really need a tuner with streamed content available now. Also I put together a system that can evolve slowly as funds permit. Start out with 1 pair of Airmotiv 4s Powered Monitor speakers, on sale now by the way. An Oppo BDP 103 which will play blue ray discs, and stream content brilliantly. Also has an HDMI input for your subscriber services, you know cable/satellite. Get an SVS PB-1000 Subwoofer.
Since the Oppo does already all the decoding no receiver is needed, and has volume adjustment as well. I would start off with a 2.1 rig, get 2 more pairs of Airmotiv 4s doubling up on the center channel, yep this works. Have a room mate doing the same with his Airmotiv 5s on their side. Works fine. The Airmotivs already have built in power so no amp is needed. Also yes you would Y out the center channel out for the 2 Airmotiv 4s you have in the center. The PB-1000 is great subwoofer for the money. Also remember the Oppo has bass management too.
So starting you would be about $1270.00 or so to start off with something real good, and finish up with the remaining channels as funds permit. Get a Pre Pro later too. That is what I would do.

Geez - Youse guys don't know how to shop!
Midrange surround speaker systems (Infinity, Klipsch, JBL, Yamaha, Polk, etc.) can be had every weekend for pennies on the dollar. Where? At yard sales. Turn up your nose all you want - my yard sale purchases over the years have included:
Martin Logan subwoofer Rogers LS3-5a speakers Nice tower/center/surround speaker matched sets More Klipsch stuff than I can remember
I've outfitted numerous friends with 5.1 speaker systems (NICE ones) and usually for less than $300 for the whole set. AV receivers can be had for $50 on up. I've bought some as low as $10.
Now don't expect to find the perfect setup on your first foray - You may have to use every Saturday morning for a month... But you WILL find bargains. And don't be afraid to "climb the food chain" in terms of used equipment, either.
So my advice is: If you're on a budget, DON'T BUY NEW. Used gear is perfectly functional and can be had for pennies on the dollar.
If you don't want to spend the time & effort on yard sales, keep an eye on CraigsList and on the local college bulletin board. At the end of each semester, students leave & sell off their dorm systems (some of which are NICE).
Part of the fun is the hunt - It's like deep sea fishing - you NEVER KNOW what you'll find on your line...
