Spending 1,200 will cost more in the long run when the upgrade big hits. I would say double the amount and you're good to go.

Geez - Youse guys don't know how to shop! Midrange surround speaker systems (Infinity, Klipsch, JBL, Yamaha, Polk, etc.) can be had every weekend for pennies on the dollar. Where? At yard sales. Turn up your nose all you want - my yard sale purchases over the years have included: Martin Logan subwoofer Rogers LS3-5a speakers Nice tower/center/surround speaker matched sets More Klipsch stuff than I can remember I've outfitted numerous friends with 5.1 speaker systems (NICE ones) and usually for less than $300 for the whole set. AV receivers can be had for $50 on up. I've bought some as low as $10. Now don't expect to find the perfect setup on your first foray - You may have to use every Saturday morning for a month... But you WILL find bargains. And don't be afraid to "climb the food chain" in terms of used equipment, either. So my advice is: If you're on a budget, DON'T BUY NEW. Used gear is perfectly functional and can be had for pennies on the dollar. If you don't want to spend the time & effort on yard sales, keep an eye on CraigsList and on the local college bulletin board. At the end of each semester, students leave & sell off their dorm systems (some of which are NICE). Part of the fun is the hunt - It's like deep sea fishing - you NEVER KNOW what you'll find on your line... Boomzilla Agreed! You can definitely acquire a nice system in the used market. Very nice system indeed! You just need to be patient and then a little more patient. Everything but the amps on my two channel rig was purchased used and at a very reasonable price!!! I won't even tell you how little, relatively to new, I spent on my speakers including stands. In fact, even after months of owning these speakers I have not seen them for less money ever.

Hey gus4emotiva, I was using Panasonic SA-HE200 receivers for 6.1 and was very satisfied. Really good rated receivers with 130 wpc x 6 (I have three or four around the house still). I preferred the sound and output of these receivers to my Yamaha HTR's. 6 channels were plenty in a similar sized room to your buddies. I used four of the Infinity QPS-1 surrounds and a pair of P-QPS as front and rear centers coupled with an Infinity powered sub. This kind of system can be had for half of the spending money he is allotting and it kept me satisfied for years. I would search out some good used equipment for him if he is intent on going home theater to start off. Obviously some other posters are trying to get him into a 2 channel rig, which is fine if he is buying but if he wants surround there are lots of inexpensive options.

Did you say you still have three or four Panasonic receivers? I am most definitely, with all my respects, intrgued about what makes you buy so much or so many of the same thing?

Back when I bought these receivers I had A/B'd them against the Pioneer, Yamaha, even a couple of Onkyo and Denon and the Panasonic sounded best. Pre HDMI days remember...but overall I had a great experience with the first one so I sought out others to replace my aging surround systems. Now, once again I have replaced these systems with the Sherbourn SR-120's. When I find something I like I replace my older gear with it and sell my older gear. Which I need to do as I have about five receivers, forty or so speakers, dvd players, cd players, dvd recorders, amps, eq's, cassette decks.....you name it....that I have to move!

If he wants to go new. Look at EMPTek for speakers. Note, if he can wait until Christmas these will all be on sale. R5Bi Bookshelf Speakers-$225 x 2 pair = $450 R5Ci Center Channel Speaker-$195 (have one of these which I may sell). Shipping may be a deal breaker here which may push him over. Sub-Many options here, but sign up for Fry's daily promos and pick up a Klipsch sub for $199 or less and free shipping. Frys will also have Blu Ray specials and if you do not mind refreshed Frys and Newegg have deals all the time. But for this estimate let's say $70. If you can find n Emotiva Fusion 8100 used, that would be a good start but if not, there are plenty of receivers you can get from $250 up.
Woot.com also often has HT bundles and component specials.
If he wants to go used, he can pull together a ton of options.

The Hsu bookshelf speakers are also supposed to be very nice performers.

Not sure about that combo, both good quality but 88db efficient speakers with a 40 wpc amp may be a stretch. My buddy had a NAD and they usually rate their stuff pretty low so it may be enough to fill a room, although not reference level loud.
