I noticed after watching a ~3 hour film last evening that both my XPA-1s and my XPA-3 were quite hot. The XPA-1s were much hotter than the XPA-3, and one of the XPA-1s more than the other. Also, two of the amps had a high-pitched sound for quite some time after turning them off (primarily coming from the hotter XPA-1). I would think that these things are somewhat normal given the power of the amps, but I haven't noticed them before. Anyone else experience these symptoms? The one XPA-1 is the same amp that I mentioned in this thread ( emotivalounge.proboards.com/thread/39455/xpa-1-gen-2-clicking ) that makes a clicking noise.

I'm not sure if the high pitched noise is the same as this but my brother had a xpa 5 g2 that when powered down in standby mode it caused a loud high pitch noise in the room that only the wife and kids could hear but he couldn't and after a few days of hearing it the kid asked about it and further investigation with emotive , they said something about the amp oscillating (whatever that means) and sent it back to get repaired.

Parasitic oscillations. If a componant, or two, drift out of their designated range, an amplifier can turn itself into an oscillator. When this happens, it will consume more power than usual. A high, almost ultrasonic tone would be a symptom to watch out for.

Another interesting dimension is that in warmer weather, there is reduced heat transfer from an amp to surrounding air.

This is exactly what it is! Maybe I should contact Emotiva about it?
