Hi Keith From day 1 my XSP-1 Gen2 gets warm on the right side. I am using balanced connectors to a new SA-250 amp and driving Acoustic Research AR90’s. It gets very warm on the right side and begins to smell of electronics after an hour use. After 1.5 hours is very warm and the sound gets grainy in the upper mid and mild distortion. The only thing I can see in there, on that side, are a few caps. I don’t know if this warmth is normal. The amp is cooler to the touch than the right side of the pre. My original set-up had the tuner on top of the XSP-1. I added risers to the tuner to provide a good inch of clearance. It still got warm so I pulled the XSP-1 from my system and put my Rotel RC-1082 in its place for now. I spoke to another Lounge member who has his new XSP-1 set up like this (see attached picture below) and tells me his pre doesn’t get warm at all. SQ is not near what it was using the Rotel w/ RCA cables in place of XLR on the XSP-1 (no balanced conns on the Rotel). Had I not had the XSP-1 and just tried that amp compared to my XPA-2 using RCA's/Rotel, it would probably be going back. Can XLR balanced connectors really make that much difference in sound? Like better bass response. I couldn’t stand the sound with my Rotel after listening with the XSP-1 so I reconfigured my rack and gave the XSP-1 its own shelf to see if it still gets warm. It now has 2 inches between the top of the unit and the shelf above. I played the system using the tuner, phono and CD player. It did get warm but not very warm after 1.5 hours and I did not experience any degradation to the SQ. I took the opportunity to place a very accurate Taylor Instruments mercury thermometer on the warm side. It got to 95 deg F. I have not had the chance to play the system any longer than 1.5 hours. My big question is: Is the warmth on the right side normal? Should I send it in for a check-up?

Hi you mentioned an amp but you also refer to it as the XSP-1. So just to confirm are you talking about your XSP-1 pre amp or the XPA-2 amp getting warm and mildly distorting?

Its the XSP-1 Gen2 Pre that I'm having an issue with. I further went into the SQ I get from it vs my Rotel Pre and two diff Emo amps I have. Quote from opening line: "From day 1 my XSP-1 Gen2 gets warm on the right side. I am using balanced connectors to a new SA-250 amp......."
I would think that if the warmth issue is normal then why would the other member not be having an issue as well.

I think the distortion issue isn't normal. What do you mean by mild distortion? It could possibly be that your source unit is distorting at its line level output. It's also possible one or more of your cables are slightly damaged. It could also point to an issue with the XSP-1.

The distortion is ONLY when the XSP-1 gets very warm and its producing an electronics odor. I'm sure it's the fact that the Pre is abnormally warm.
I find it difficult to believe that with 2" of top clearance it's still getting as warm as it does. I don't think its normal.

My XSP-1 Gen.2 certainly gets "warmer" than my old Adcom GFP-555II with minimal venting. But considering that the XSP-1 has about three times the circuitry in it, it's not surprising.

Thats obviously abnormal. I just checked mine - it is barely above room temp - 86F according to my laser temp gauge. No electronic smells either. Better put in a call to Emotiva tomorrow morning so you can get it repaired.

I called Friday and have an RMA number. I was just trying to avert a needless shipment if it was normal. Around the volume knob is warm as well.
Thanks to ALL for your input.

Good Luck!!!! Im sure the new one will be fine. My XSP does get a little warm on the right side, but only if its on a few hours... Doesnt matter if it is loud or not loud listening. My XSP definitely gets more warm than the XPR... I need to turn it more I guess.
Anyway, good luck and keep us posted!!

I wonder how many of these types of issues are due to improper handling during shipping. I don't trust my UPS driver and wouldn't put it past him to have just picked the box up and let it fall from 6 feet. Yeah, he's odd.

Well I got an email from the Repair Team regarding my XSP-1.
"Repairs completed: no problem found ran unit for the entire weekend temp only reached 91 degrees Unit passed bench functionality test."
I called and spoke to the repair tech. He has no idea why the unit was getting very warm for me and producing an electronics odor followed by grainy, mild distorted sound. He said they tested the pre with it driving an amp with a source and also just plugged it in and turned it on. I do know that just plugging it in and turning it on would NOT cause the issue I experienced. I'd feel better had they said they found x/y/z wrong and fixed it.

I'm so BS with UPS right now.
My XSP-1 was delayed going down to TN and NOW instead of being delivered on Friday it won't be delivered until Monday. UPS forgot to put it on the truck outbound from Nashville. Their customer service was of no help. Sorry was all I got.
WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? They can deliver my package ON TIME!

This USED to stress me out all the time as the anticipation is replaced with aggravation. How do I deal with it now? Well, I simply forget about it. I just keep my mind busy on other things. It really works for me. It sometimes works so well, I get surprised when it shows up at my door! Kind of an "Oh, yeah!" moment.

From UPS Quantum View: Nashville, TN, United States 08/19/2015 9:32 A.M. We left the package in our facility. This may cause a delay. We will deliver as quickly as possible. / Delivery will be rescheduled.
It got delayed in Nashville on the way down, too. WTF?

Where UPS says: "We left the package in our facility. This may cause a delay. We will deliver as quickly as possible. / Delivery will be rescheduled." This is code for: Your package fell off the conveyor, forklift or other material handling equipment and no one noticed. The resulting "reschedule" was a multiple stop and go from handler to handler. Well the box took a beating and I had to refuse it. Crushed, multiple dents and the bottom tape had all but let go. WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU?
