Hey, my Big Ego just arrived and I plugged it in and selected via iMac sound options.... no sound, so I resorted to reading the manual, and got into the audio midi app, and selected Big Ego, still no sound... the "Use this device for sound output" is greyed out... so this has to be a big hint, but after plugging and unplugging from the usb ports and changing ports, etc... and punching the 2 buttons on the Big Ego... I can't get a peep out of it. Anyone else have this experience?
Can anyone give me a clue on how to wake this little beast up?

What program are you using for playback, if iTunes sometimes the volume gets set at minimum when changing audio devices ?

My wife says mine's on the small side. I assume she meant my Ego of course.

This is the first time we've heard of anyone having that problem. Usually, on a Mac, if a device is not working properly, or if the cable is bad or disconnected, it won't show up as a choice at all (it won't show up as there but greyed out). I do have a couple of suggestions you could try...... 1) Try a different cable. If you're using a cable other then the short one we provided, it's possible that the cable is too long, or that there's something wrong with it. Therefore, whenever you're having odd problems, it's always a good idea to try another cable. (And, even though every Ego DAC is individually tested before we ship it, we don't test the cables individually - so it's possible that, even if you're using our cable, you could have gotten a bad one.) 2) It could be a software issue. For example, many player programs require you to select your output device inside the player program (in addition to selecting it in the Apple O/S). If you have some other player program still running, and it's using your other sound card, it could be blocking you from changing the default selection to a different one. Look for other things you might have running, or that start by default, that might be "holding onto" the other sound card. 3) Some specific programs may require a "surround sound capable device" - while the Big Ego is strictly a two-channel DAC. We haven't seen this so far, and all the normal music player programs are very happy with a two-channel DAC, but a program that absolutely required a surround-sound DAC, or that was specifically set to output surround sound audio, might not allow you to select the Big Ego as your output device. You could check for other audio or video players that might have been left running, and you might also want to check the sound settings in the device that is the current default (if it's set to output surround sound, that might keep you from being able to switch to another device that won't accept that setting). 4) Try UAC1 "driverless" mode and see what happens. If you hold the Filter Select button on your Ego DAC down WHILE plugging in the USB cable, the RED LED down at the far end will light, and you'll be in UAC1 mode. Normally you would use this mode with a PC if you didn't want to install drivers. On Windows computers, using the Big Ego in its default mode requires a separate driver.... while UAC1 mode does not. Modern Apple computers normally support both modes without any extra drivers. However, if your iMac is really old, it may not have UAC2 support, or, even if your iMac has the right drivers, there could be something wrong with them. Since the two modes use entirely separate drivers, by switching modes you'll be using different drivers on your Apple, and the UAC1 drivers may work correctly. (Even though they're built in, you ARE still using drivers on an Apple computer.) Note that, in UAC1 mode, you will be limited to sample rates of 96k and lower (44k, 48k, 88k, and 96k). Also note that computers see "the Big Ego in UAC2 mode" as a different device than "the Big Ego in UAC1 mode", so you will probably have to go into the Midi panel and re-select the Ego when you switch between the two modes. DO let us know what you find. (And, of course, call in so we can discuss further details in person if none of this fixes the problem). Usually, on a Mac, if a device is not working properly, or if the cable is bad or disconnected, it won't show up as a choice at all (it won't show up as there but greyed out). Thanks Keith for the response.... I had to go away for a bit, but when I returned, I started from scratch again and I discovered my problem. You are exactly right. It's a connection issue. The mini plug of my headphones was not mating snugly with the Ego... the edge trim of the ego was hitting the rubberized casement of the mini plug and preventing a truly snug connection, even though it felt snug when inserted... so I just brute forced it and got the sound going, and now I'll have to take a knife and trim my plug so it can properly butt up against the Ego's output. If the Ego's headphone output were dead center, it would have fit snugly the first time... but maybe there's a good reason that it's off center, I dunno... but anyway, all is well now, and I can proceed to enjoy! Thank you for the details!

⅛" headphone jacks are Hell's revenge on honest audiophiles. Just saying...

I love a happy ending... Now, how does it sound??? Magnificent! :-) I really like having the 4 filters to play with, too. It will take me some listening time to decide what's appropriate when... I love knobs!

Dan we are still waiting for you to update your sig with a list of your equipment so we all know what your running there at home, maybe even list the un-released prototype stuff I can't speak for Dan but if I was in his position I wouldn't have time to update the equipment list every day, perhaps a few times a day. So much to list, so many options to choose from, a whole warehouse full of toys, plus a fully equipped test lab, just down the hall. Cheers Gary

Hmmm...
I appear to have the same "Use this device for sound output" greyed out issue.
What's weird is that I have used my Big Ego on my iMac with no problem. In fact, I liked the sound enough to go out and buy a new Mac Mini to use as a music server. But, the Mini sees the Big Ego; it just will not give me a hot "Use this Device..." button.
Any further thoughts?
