I'm currently keeping a close eye on the Emotiva eBay page for an ERC, as I'd like to have one that matches the rest of my gear. However, one thing has disturbed me about the ERC since I first saw it...why would you make a digital display that matches none of your other products? You have the Fusion that looks great, the XDA, the XSP and XRC's.......then you have the ERC with it's blocky numbers. I don't get it. I know, I know...I'm a picky guy. But little things like that seriously drive me nuts. Just curious if anyone knew the why behind it. And maybe I can nudge someone at HQ as to give a hint if something new is on the way...huh? ....HUH?!...

What will be the DAC you will use for your ERC-? ie, do you have or plan to get an XMC-1? If so, it doesn't really matter which of the last two ERCs you purchase. They're both excellent CD players, using there DACs or not. Great quality sound and product. I love the looks and sound of the ERC-2, purchased used with plenty of warranty left on her. More then most companies put on their new units.

I have an XDA-2 that I plan on using with it.
Right now that DAC just handles music from my PC, but I figure I'd go ahead and let it handle any sources that I add in the future instead of passing them directly to the Fusion if it's related to music.

I've never heard the XDA-2 but know first hand that the ERC- 2 & 3 sound great!. If you could point me to the PDF of the Fusion I'd be happy to look at it and give you my opinion. 8)

I managed to track it down: emotiva.com/resources/manuals/fusion_8100_user_manual_v10.pdfI'm liking the Fusion a lot - it didn't take long after getting it to do a full stop on Yamaha and switch entirely over to Emotiva. The XDA-2 was actually the first piece of equipment I got and I can certainly hear a difference between it and the 96 kHz stream that the Fusion processes from my laptop's HDMI. It's a night and day difference.

If I'm correct, the ERC-3 has a superior DAC than the ERC-2. The ERC-2 has either the same or a similar DAC as the XDA-2. Going through an XDA-2, the only ERC version that it would be an upgrade to would be the ERC-1. From personal experience, I feel that the sound from the ERC-3 is better than the sound of the stand-alone ERC-1 or the ERC-1 through a XDA-2. Taking an ERC-3 through a XDA-2, in my opinion, downgrades the sound quality of the ERC-3.

I may in the near future, how should I do it with an XMC-1? it only has one balanced in connection, maybe direct mode with Coax in for both, would this bypass the XMC DAC?

Might just bypass that then.
Still stands...blocky display, bleck. Give me those smooth edged numbers and text any day.

So...if you are already using a PC as a source to your xda-2, why do you need a transport? Why not just go fully ripped or downloaded music?

Yes (that's why I quantified by "personal experience"). I've never done it with the XMC-1; only done it with the XSP-1. Digital is digital: balanced, coax, or optical, neither add or subtract bits from the data stream. If you're having attenuation of the signal over that short of distance (unless your players are down the street) I'd be more worried about cancer than DACs.

You're not gonna hear any difference between the different ERC generations with your eyes closed. Only if you know which one is which and feel pressure to say that you heard a difference.

But just like their overall business model, they sometimes shoot from the hip instead of taking a long time to aim. Just know it's highly likely you'll get dissed on this forum for complaining about the lights. There is a big group here who thinks us light picky folks are beneath them. And while the lights on the ERC don't bother me, what I still think each and every time I see it, is that it's backwards, like it's made for a left handed person. For me, the tray should be on the left, and the buttons should be on the right. It bothers me like the lights bother you. Stupid maybe, but I understand your feelings.

Come on now,,,,,,,,,,I'm back to chocolate or dark chocolate, doesn't really matter! I love both!!! Close your eyes and listen to the music. You can love both, but they are different. And not all are made to suit everyone. My wife loves the 82% Scharffenberger Dark. Have you ever tried it? It's super dry and super bitter and downright nasty if you ask me. shop.scharffenberger.com/82-Extra-Dark-Chocolate-Bar/p/SFB-CBDARK&c=ScharffenBerger@Chocolate@DarkThe ERC is improperly named. It should be the E LC for Left handers. E RC is for Right handers, which it most certainly is not.

I liked that bitterness, and preferred it over Mr. Goodbar or Krackel, and certainly over the regular chocolate. Milk chocolate is blah. Okay, sorry to hijack the thread.

So...if you are already using a PC as a source to your xda-2, why do you need a transport? Why not just go fully ripped or downloaded music? Mark Because sometimes it's easier to just use a transport, say if I don't want the PC to be running, I don't have the album on my computer (my system does not have a disc drive btw), or something along those lines. A simple transport is easier to use and more streamlined.
