My friends, my aging Motorola modem needs replacing, it keeps loosing it's connection and dropping/turning off! It works when I reboot it but I'm sure it's dine!
What modem and models do yall recommend?? Very large home, area wise. Two story and I do have gear at extrem ends of the house. Not sure of the age of my router? NETGEAR R6300 WiFi Router
there can be 13 items connected at a time but not all used at the same time. But they are all seen on my network just fine before this aging modem started acting up.
My current modem is a Motorola Surfboard SBG 6580
What say you??
Thanks

Surprisingly Wilburt it is a modem Which leads you to a conundrum....Usually people have the cable modem. And then add a wifi router. So you may need to buy two things. As you need the cable modem to accept the cable internet signal. And then the wifi router to broadcast it.

Folks,,,,,I need a Cable Modem.
It need not be a router as well. The NETGEAR Router is not going down, the Motorola Cable modem keeps dropping out. The only cure being to unplug, wait and plug it back in,,,,,ie,,,,reboot. Then I works fine for awhile.
Am I missing something? I think not.
My wireless network is there the whole time, but when the cable modem goes down there's no getting out to the WWW

If your ISP supports it, you can't go wrong with Arris Motorola SB 6183. I use this in conjunction with a Netgear R 7500 router.

You might want to consider a cable modem with a wireless router/firewall built in. Much less hassle with getting everything to talk to each other and better security IMO.

Why do they make these routers with only 4 rj45 ports? I need one for my blu ray player, one for my apple tv, one for my tv, one for my htpc, my tivo even thou I have a wireless dongle thingy but still if I had an iffy connection I would need one for it too, hmm I don't think my XMC has one connection to it . My roku is wireless as well which should be the norm with these media streamers by the way! I know I'n getting off topic here, but why can't we charge these items with hdmi wires!!!! Rant over Dan

What modem and models do yall recommend?? Very large home, area wise. Two story and I do have gear at extrem ends of the house. Not sure of the age of my router? NETGEAR R6300 WiFi Router Well, we are quite happy so far with our Arris Motorola surfboard 6141. Very popular and highly rated (check Amazon, e.g.) We've only had it for about 9 months, but it's about paid for rather than renting one from Comcast, our ISP. It connects to the rest of the house via an Asus RT-N66U dual-band gigabit router (this is their N router not the newer AC version). Your router will determine coverage to your home, not the modem. Ours is situated "somewhat" central on the 2nd floor, seems to work fine; we have about 2300 sq. feet, but I remember testing it when we first bought it. I walked a laptop outside several houses down and it was down to 1 bar at the third house. Your range will also be determined by the walls and stuff it has to broadcast through, which I'm sure you already know. We prefer to go wired, so what we have done in addition is to add MOCA boxes in several "far-flung" (or at least otherwise not directly reachable) rooms, and use those to extend the LAN. MOCA is basically ethernet over TV cabling, and of course we've got TV cabling throughout the house - it's compatible with cable TV but not satellite. MOCA is 10/100. Everywhere else that is directly reachable is gigabit.

I would assume ones that are labeled "DOCSIS 3.0" are supposed to be the latest and greatest but maybe build quality and reliability make a difference. My suggestion would be to look at what is available on Amazon and see what the user reviews have to say. Oh, and then when you decide on what to buy, make sure you get an upgraded power cable and coax cable to connect to the wall.

It appears from some of the above comments that one does not have to use the modem supplied by the cable company. I did not know that. ? Russ

Re Comcast, yes. They seem to want to supply a gateway modem to you for I think $8/month, though that may vary based on where you are. Since we did this when we initially signed up for their internet service it was pretty painless to go with our own purchase. Swapping out their rental modem for your own purchased modem afterwards is also allowed but then you get to deal with their customer service - and YMMV there ;-) It appears from some of the above comments that one does not have to use the modem supplied by the cable company. I did not know that. ?

Compatibility of a modem with your ISP is something that you may want to check into as well. I know Comcast has a list of modems that would work if I wanted to stop renting and use my own. mynewmodem.comcast.net/

I'm surprised they're still called modems. Modulator/Demodulator is what "MODEM" stands for. Fortunately, my ISP (Verizon) doesn't require one.

Rant over Dan Totally agree. But it's so they can then sell you an item called a "switch." Another good example of computer manufacturing people not on board with HT equipment people and vice versa.

I have the 6580 too. Had similar problems but it has been working for a while now. I was looking at upgrading to the 6782. They have other products but I'm still researching.

I had to reboot it 4 or 5 times yesterday! Now that the new one is in da house,,,,,,,,,,it hasn't acted up once! Funny,,,,no? ive found it to be all I need without a higher price point. YMMV
