Can anyone tell me the difference between the xda-2 that I currently have and the xda-2 gen 2?

If you are using USB, the XDA-2 gen 2 can do some rarer high resolution modes - I think 88.2 and 176.4 Khz. Your XDA-2 can do all the resolutions on all the other inputs. Your USB connection on gen 1 can also do all audio resolutions except for the two mentioned which tend to be rarely used. If you mainly listen to CD audio and streaming stuff on the internet, you don't have to worry. The gen 2 has a black trim. No sound quality improvements. That's it.

An upgrade is the DC-1. They sell for decent prices on the emporium.
