Samsung TV mini connect box has this ARC-hdmi
I still don't understand exactly what the hdmi-ARC is for? hdmi will transmit both video & audio right.....
I did read the manual but I don't get it.
What is the purpose of the ARC hdmi input on the mini connect box? How should I make use of it?
Sorry if this is a silly question....

Audio Return Channel so the TV can send Audio back to for instance an AVR. For instance if you watch Netflix using the SmartTV app in your new Samsung, the TV can send the sound to to your AVR/processor via HDMI ARC.

So I guess there is no need to use the optical output from the tv to the processor, UMC-1 in my case as currently I am using this route... Does the AVR/processor need to be ARC compatible? So I need to connect the ARC-hdmi input from the mini connect box to one of the UMC-1 hdmi inputs? If so how do I pick the setting under this UMC-1 hdmi input?

It won't work.

In other words, stick with the TOSLink cable.

Just my opinion, but you are not missing out on anything with this headache called HDMI CEC.

Just my opinion, but you are not missing out on anything with this headache called HDMI CEC. I also have a Samsung smart tv and will say that the arc hdmi is pretty neat stuff . When you set it up correctly and the tv recognizes the receiver it can set the tv remote control to work with the receivers volume and the tv can power up and down the connected device. That being said, it can cause big problems with connected devices and is very unreliable . My receiver would get stuck on and couldn't change the volume or power it off and I tried it a few times in a month or so. I shut the ARC off and no more issues.

I've tried ARC with my Panasonic plasma with limited success, for use with its on-board applications(Amazon VOD, Netflix, Youtube, etc.). I've found that the outboard streamer FireTV is much more robust app-wise, as well as audio-wise(ie: Dolby Digital Plus) in its capabilities than the built-in apps my TV has, so FireTV for me solves the HDMI CEC/ARC headache.
