Currently running 7.2 ("traditional" 5 + front presence); mostly HT and TV, not much 2-channel (tend to play even music in full surround mode). Currently have the XPA-3 powering L/C/R. Awaiting the arrival of the XPA-100s, which will go to the L/R, XPA-3 will then power the center and surrounds. Front presence running off the Yamaha 3040. Planning to implement 9.2 - still undecided whether to add rear surrounds or Atmos-style ceiling speakers above my MLP. Have had my XPA-3 on the market, might have an opportunity to sell it soon. Based on the setup, if I did sell the XPA-3, wondering which way I should go for the next amp(s)? Initially, thinking the XPA-5 would be ideal. But also considered the idea of adding a third XPA-100 AND The other thought is I just keep the XPA-3 - maybe use that on the rear surrounds (if I go that way) and add an XPA-200 for the side surrounds? I can obviously go up to 11.2 with my Yamaha, but don't know if I'm ready to go full Atmos (hassle to add ceiling speakers - both time and SWMBO), and I do plan to add ceiling speakers in the bonus room next door, so kind of need 2 of the channels off the AVR unless I can figure out another way to get the content to those speakers.

rear surrounds is a must to enjoy a blu ray disc with DTS/Dolby 7.1 channel signal. if I were you, I should prioritize the rears more than the front heights. transfer those CS26 to the rears man.
go with full atmos in the future and just get another cheaper receiver for your other room.

Thanks. I really like the effect of the front presence speakers, so I won't be getting rid of those, likely unless I went full Atmos with 4 ceiling speakers. But, your comment does bring me around to another question I have about what type of speakers I should use for the rears (ie. direct radiators vs. bipoles). But that is probably a question for a different day/thread

i have the Yamaha rx-a1000. i think its already 6 years old so I'm having that upgrade itch again. I've read somewhere on AVSforum or i think that was on Polk forum that Marantz is a more warmer receiver/PRE amp compared to yamahas. so, im leaning towards a Marantz if it were true. i just bought a used XPA5 gen1 from the classifieds at AVS last week too and me and my wife are one happy campers.

you should add some rears on your setup and activate the dolby digital EX and DTS ES Matrix.
