I was born in 1952 so there was lots of good sci fi / horror , adventure serials on the radio when i was young , all the way up to about 1909 with the CBS Mystery Theater program hosted by EG Marshall , most of the sci fi radio programs are 30 minutes long & are about space adventure , many of the sci fi huge hits like Will Smiths I Robot are taken from these old radio serials .
Youtube is full of good sci fi radio programs from the 50's & 60's like X-Minus 1 & Dimension X , then mystery programs such as the affore mentioned CBS mystery theater , Horror programs such as Lights Out ! & Inner Sanctum , its dated material where the sci fi trips to mars or pluto take place in 1999 or 2012 but its still very interesting listening & another reason to fire up your 2 channel rig .
I was just getting my playlist ready for the next few nights when i thought of mentioning it here , i love listening to the old sci fi & mystery serials when im laying dowm for the night , if your interested hit youtube & do a search using the term ( Old Time Radio ) & you'll see hundreds of programs .
X-Minus 1 & Dimension X are my favorite sci fi serials & most are taken directly from the Ray Bradbury series of science fiction , you got nothing to loose so give it a shot , one of our daughter in laws is now hooked on the old programming & listens more than we do , we listen at bed time as well as when we 1st awake & listen with our morning coffee hour .
Let me know if you find anything you like as there is alot more to vintage radio than silly Lone Ranger junk .

Not quite on topic but I recently purchased the DVD set of episodes of Science Fiction Theater, which ran from 1954-56. A very intelligently done series of half hour shows that's really interesting to watch because each episode deals with their ideas of the science of the future modeled on what was known and in use back then. Many of the episodes feature the forerunners of today's actual technology. The actual air time averages 25-26 minutes, unlike the 18 or so minutes of actual show time for today's half hour shows.

I have great fond memories of listening to some of these shows on the radio while laying in bed before my slumber. A more simpler time for sure.

Me, I built a crystal radio set & listened to the local black radio station (that had MUCH better music than the white ones). I got to hear the Wicked Pickett, Sam & Dave, and even, occasionally, the King of 'em all - James Brown! Until I got busted at school with the crystal radio (using my desk as an antenna), it was great.

I dont know how i posted radio serials ended around 1909 when i meant 1990 era , the last michigan station to air the programming was either WWJ or WJR , both AM stations , if you havent listened to any vintage radio sci fi programs in years it only takes an episode or 2 to remember how america felt about the cold war, atomic power & the bomb shelter craze . I listened to 2 shows this morning & both story lines were based on the human race living underground due to " Atomic Wars " , original air dates were 1949 & the Asian Confederation was the enemy , im still amazed at how the actors were able to perform all those shows live in conjunction with an orchestra for sound effects & a director keeping everything in sync , Movie actor Leslie Neelson was in one epidose i heard this morning along with Jack Webb from Dragnet . Here's an example of the vintage radio sci fi program i like X-Minus One where the last man alive on earth hears a knock at his door , who is it ? m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLad6s9IDwMOo2MkkMERNzDLBJgo3zYOFA&v=NKzFzz2RdiAI like the old programs because they are entertaining but it also gives us excuses to use the 2 channel systems spread out throught our houses instead of them just collecting dust like the tv monitors in all the bedrooms , im suprised only one member here remembers radio serials .

I have to take it that you, hifihoney, never read Asimov's I, Robot, which is what the movie was based on. There is another I, Robot that was made into an episode of The Outer Limits (for some reason that episode and the name Adam Link stick in my mind).
One of the best Sci-Fi radio serials was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The BBC TV series, the books and the movie can't hold a candle to the original BBC Radio series (which came before all the other formats). I remember hearing it in September 1981, and making time each week to listen. The radio series still holds up, and is a great listen.

Nope never read the book in question , my point wasnt to accuse plagerism of I Robot , it was to give an example of the topics used in sci fi radio programs brodcast from the 40's till the 90's , i hear lots of broadcasts from the late 40's where the topic is the same as a modern movie . I agree the Hitch hikers guide was a good serial & there are lots of episodes still on youtube , at one point last year there was a complete list of all episodes for all seasons posted & it got taken down after being up well over a year atleast , i make time every day to listen to atleast one program in the morning & one at night , before i retired i'd listen to them durring my daily 2 hour commute & it sure beat morning radio shows .

Good call , i remember that program when i was a little kid ,.they'd play reruns late at night on saturdays if i remember correct , and your right about the technology implications dreamed up back then matching our current tech . When Nextell 1st came out in the 90's it was so new my office held a meeting with a Nextell rep who had a 2 hour class teaching us how to use them complete with a instructional video , i remember thinking how it reminded me of the communicators on Star Trek , They prodicted pc's & i pads too , i'll be looking up the Science Fiction Theater & re watch them all , thanks for the reminder .

... it only takes an episode or 2 to remember how america felt about the cold war, atomic power & the bomb shelter craze . ... As teenagers we'd often do odd jobs to make money, for me mostly to buy guitar equipment. One day several of us took a job digging a bomb shelter in one of the locals back yard. The guy was friendly, but a little paranoid ... "ok, you kids, you can't tell anyone about this, there's only room for my family". We were pretty sure no one would be needing this, but appreciated the job and assured him his secret was safe. Two days hard work and we had a pretty good hole (fortunately it was nothing like the rock soil where I live now!), don't know if it ever got finished, but I think he was safe.

Damm that had to of been hard work as a kid digging a shelter hole , our place in Bloomfield Hills has a shelter below the basement my father had installed when he bought the property in the 50's , then built a home over it in the 70's , i remember watching the guys use a clam digger to get 30ft down into the clay & as a boy being amazed at the giant back hoe.
When i took the property over we ripped out all the hand crank air filters , shelves & beds then paneled the room , put in a dropped ceiling to hide the conduits bringing in the 50 amp power box he had put in there ( 50 amps wtf was he thinking ) & we use it for our 5 channel audio room .
We still have the big ole Detroit Deisel generator that he had built in the basement but had the big fuel tanks in the basement drained then removed , i cant imagine getting a permit nowdays to put 500 gallons of deisel fuel in the basement of a home !
Remember the stupid " Duck & Cover " drills we used to have in school ? like hiding under our desks & covering our faces was going to protect us from a nuclear detonation , just plain silly looking back at it all .

Listening to those old sci fi shows i truly believe most americans that passed away in the late 50's through the late 70's would be very shocked at how useless NASA became & how little we've done in space exploration , they were expecting Mars by 1990 & farther into space in the 2,000's & all we got was the y2k scare , what a jip .

Lots of good stuff and lots of waist. Let a small businessman have input, as well as old time self sufficient farmers and regular folks as well as the scientists and we be on Mars already.,,,,,,but now im rambling,,,,,,,,

Have you watched the documenatry titled "Mars Underground" yet ? If you watch it its impossible to not walk away angry , real rocket scientists have a very cheap & proven plan to put men on Mars for the same price as 2 stupid probes , unlinke the plan NASA came up with requiring a massive space factory orbiting the moon to build a ship to Mars in space , costing trillions , i remember watching Neil Armstrong on the moon when i was a kid & never would of thought that was the end of space exploration by the US . If you havent checked it out do so if you get the chance , it spells out the trillions wasted by NASA's internal bickering & shows how cheap a manned mission to Mars really is , the men would spend months on Mars instead of a few days like the moon when we went there .

Hence my reasoning to have regular folks deeply involved with decision making. The two of us and a small dedicated team could most likely " GETTER DONE! " in relatively speaking, cheap and quick.
Bureaucracy, BS and little men in a pissing contest screw things up every time!!

Found "Mars Underground", will watch tonight. If you want to read a great Mars survival story, check out Andy Weir's The Martian. It was a self-published novel that has become Amazon's scf-fi best seller, and has been optioned for a movie. The Mars mission he describes roughly follows NASA's plan. The hero is an astronaut abandoned on Mars after his mission is terminated early due to an approaching violent dust storm. His crewmates believe he is dead, and leave him behind. He has to figure how to survive on Mars for the next four years, until the arrival of the next scheduled mission. The science is solid (except for a couple of minor mistakes) and the story is fascinating.

Great book , my wife bought it about 6 months ago on her ipad thingy & we both read it , im patiently waiting to see if the movie version holds up to the book , matt damon is pretty good so we have high hopes . On a news worthy note im sure you & most others know NASA finally admitted there is liquid water on Mars , we knew that back in the 70's after Viking showed pics of it but it took them 40 more yrs & more rovers to prove it , im curious as to what else they know about mars & aint saying , if theres water theres life . Most reports i read about nasa & mars say nasa dont want to panic people announcing life on another planet , aside from religious nutts whos gonna freak out & burn everything down because there is life on another planet , sadly at my age i highly doubt i'll be around to see man on mars which is something my generation expected to see yrs ago , oh well atleast we got the movie comming

For those following this thread i heard an episode of X-Minus One this morning titled " If you were a Molkin " that would make an excellent movie , astronaughts discover a planet called Molkin inhabited by humans with the ability to breed any traight they desire into their children , if the woman wants a red head girl with a big nose, floppy ears & red eyes it happens , the Molkin people love earth people & try to immulate them .
They have little babbies with full beards , they mature to adulthood in 5 yrs & the Molkin mother can produce a child identical to any earth man that reaches adulthood in 5 yrs , then the Molkin people try to infiltrate earth by copying an earth man & woman then sending them back to earth to breed , pretty cool stuff for half hour stories .
