The fact that it has a "World Class DAC" is purely marketing and really doesn't mean a whole lot. There are lots of good DAC chips out there, but the implementation is what matters. This is like me saying that if I bought a Ferrari that I could be competitive at the track. The reality is that I would probably get bet by a more seasoned driver in a station wagon.

Especially when that guy in the station wagon side-swipes you and you cant see because your crying like a baby!!! I know id be!!,,,,,,now, how can I afford a Ferrari???

If it supported airplay, I'd get some.

Sonos...meh, chrome cast.. Meh (just my opinion, I admit they work great for some people's needs....we all got different needs. Same goes for using Apple TV...and I do one a few of those. My fingers are crossed that Auralic will ship the aries mini at the end of this month, and fingers crossed for the projected $400. Same price as a sonos but way more quality

Note that it also has an optical digital output - so you can plug it directly into the Toslink DIGITAL input on a DC-1, or an XDA-2, or an XMC-1.
(They do claim that it supports WAV files, but they don't seem to mention the actual audio quality it provides - like whether it can do bit-perfect transmission of WAV files and what bit rates it supports).

Seems like a cool little gadget. I see where it states about the toslink.....however when you look at the device there is no optical out. From what I can find on the site there is nothing about the toslink out either. Maybe I am missing something

My chromecast audio just got the firmware update that enables 24/96 and multi-room playback. I bought a 24/96 album off HDTracks and installed the Plex Media server on a laptop and the Plex client on my Nexus tablet. I'm now able to stream hi res files from the laptop to the Chromecast which is feeding the optical input of an XDA-2. Holy cow! This is a total game changer for me. It sounds absolutely fantastic.

The Chromecast will then attach to the reamining speaker via bluetooth for stereo sound. Just remember to set the Chromecast to bi amp mode.

You guys make it sound like the Chromecast sounds horrible. I have plugged mine to my usp-1 and then an xpa-2--> DEF TECH BP7006 pair, and trust me, for it's supposed to do, it sounds well streaming from Pandora and others online streaming on my 2 channels system.

Actually Chromecast Audio sounds fantastic using Google Music. I have it going toslink to my Jolida tube Dac FX III, Classe pre, Emo UPA-200, Magnapan MMG's. Sounds great considering the source is 320 signal from Google. I love it. Now have 5 Chromecast throughout the house. I'll choose it 100% of the time over spotify and for $10 a month 95% over Tidal.

I can't believe I missed this thread until now!
To me, it sounds like the article title is a bit outrageous unless this Chromecast things can seamlessly work throughout a house. The #1 benefit of Sonos to me is that I can have multiple zones over my property that work together or separately to have musics sources and volumes I want where I want them. And this includes accepting line inputs from various sources in my house (like, audio from my cable, from a CD player, or even a BluRay player), and playing off a NAS, XM, Tidal, and various other internet sources with different sources at different volumes in different zones or with certain zones grouped to behave as one but with ability to tailor volume between zones that are grouped. And...all in one very fine user-friendly app.
Does the Chromecast things do all of that? If not...for my needs, it does not "compete with Sonos for a tenth the price". It stream music. Um...my PC's all do that already. If these are mainly for powered speakers (as it seems they are), then what value do they bring beyond a PC? (I already have a PC connected to my HT which can stream everything my Sonos does, but the Sonos interface is so superior that I use it most of the time.
So, not to sound like Debbie Downer, but...seriously...this thing competes with SONOS? Doesn't sound like it to me. If I had 1 place I listened to music...sure, but, then...what value over a PC I already have?

If I had 1 place I listened to music...sure, but, then...what value over a PC I already have? Mark I completely agree. I currently have 3 zones setup with my Logitech Squeezebox (defunct, I know - but very functional nonetheless) and I can't see how Chromecast competes with it. I have the capability to listen to different streams - either from my (extensive) music collection or mixed with internet audio streams. I can also control the volume independently and if I want, I can combine 2 or 3 zones to play the same source. Great for party mode! I cannot see how Chromecast adds any value in my situation. Except that when I was a poor student in a small, dingy apartment, it would've been great to stream my mobile phone to the TV. But hey... I didn't have a TV... or mobile a phone! I don't want to be a " Debbie Downer" either but can't help wondering it would be a competitive alternative title to the epic " Debbie does Dallas"!

Wow you guy's are trying real hard not to see the value of Chromecast lol.
Sonos and or squeezebox are only for Audio. (not sure on squeezebox)
Chromecast not only does music but also video to individual sources, whether that be a powered speaker device (audio) or a complete 2 channel or full blown system.
Now to Marks point at this point the Chromecast only allow you to stream one device and not all units simultaneously with the same source. example I want to stream a (one) song from my phone to the livingroom, Master Bedroom, Loft, Theater, and 2 channel listening room all at the same time.
From my review Google is working to allow this but at this time it is not available.
So if you are asking this device to be Sonos it will never be but to me is hands down better than Sonos as far as connectivity.
At first I didn't realize the value but after getting the first one I knew I had something special.
Also, I use YouTube, Daily Motion, Google Music and Movies, and stream anything from my Chrome Browser to any TV connected. I'd say neither option discussed so far can come close to that.
Give it a try.
