Wow you guy's are trying real hard not to see the value of Chromecast lol.
Sonos and or squeezebox are only for Audio. (not sure on squeezebox)
I actually am not trying hard...my primary need for streaming I wrote about is for audio. And, for that, I want the best interface and integration I can get for my household situation (more on that later).
Chromecast not only does music but also video to individual sources, whether that be a powered speaker device (audio) or a complete 2 channel or full blown system.
For the few places in my house that I want to stream video (our loft, our Great Room, our Bedroom, and my Mancave), I already have video streaming via a BluRay Player, an Xbox, 2 SmartTV's, or a PC - all of which already came with the ability to stream video from a wide variety of sources. And, in those locations, I already have Sonos for the best audio. And, I can Miracast A/V from all of our Smartphones & tablets to all of our SmartTV's...so pretty much all we want to stream, we can.
Now to Marks point at this point the Chromecast only allow you to stream one device and not all units simultaneously with the same source. example I want to stream a (one) song from my phone to the livingroom, Master Bedroom, Loft, Theater, and 2 channel listening room all at the same time.
From my review Google is working to allow this but at this time it is not available.
If that works for you, that is great. But, I need more and use it often. I am often listening to something in the Mancave, the daughter is listening to something else in a different place, and the wife in yet another place. Or, I want areas in sync when 1 or more of us is going from the kitchen to the great room to the deck to the pool to the hot tub to the master suite. And, all of use can pull from the same OR different sources AND at the same OR different volumes. And, we don't want to have to trigger/control separate units as we pass from one to the other. This is HUGE once you experience it. Don't underestimate this value.
So if you are asking this device to be Sonos it will never be but to me is hands down better than Sonos as far as connectivity.
Maybe it will, maybe it won't ever be Sonos...until it does, to me it does not "compete with Sonos at 1/10th the price" And, tell me...how is it "hands down better than Sonos as far as connectivity"? If it is video...see above. Until it does multizone audio, it is not.
At first I didn't realize the value but after getting the first one I knew I had something special.
Also, I use YouTube, Daily Motion, Google Music and Movies, and stream anything from my Chrome Browser to any TV connected. I'd say neither option discussed so far can come close to that.
If it works for you - great. As noted, Sonos full meets my audio needs, and the built-in features of other devices meets my needs for video. Others have different needs, and that is fine. If I had 1 room and no other devices which met my needs, this would be a cool device. Not my situation, so other things work better for me...
