What cables do I use to connect hk 3490 to xpa 5? I understand the pre out connections but do not know how to and where to connect to xpa.

The HK 3490 has pre outputs for only two channels, so you can only use two of the five inputs of the XPA-5. (Unless you bi-amp, but that's another discussion) The HK3490 has RCA Style connectors for it pre outputs.
You'll need to remove the shorting bars between the "Pre Out" and "Main In" connectors.
Then run RCA style cables from the two "Pre Out" connectors of the HK, and choose two of the channels of the XPA-5 to use for amplification.
Make sure the silver switches are in the "Unbalanced" position.

Most audio video receivers that have the provision to connect an external amplifier will have a grouping of RCA connections marked PRE-OUT or 7.2 PRE-OUT outputs. You use the appropriate front left and right and center and surrounds left and right going to the XPA-5.
