So I took the dive into DIY speakers...started with upgrading my ATMOS ceiling speakers with DIYsoundgroup volt 6's (x4) here is my first ever crossover and soldering...went way easier than i envisioned:   glued, sanded and painted with duratex the cabs:    installed the xover:  installed them on the ceiling...using a 3" screw through a hole in the cab...into a toggle bolt...using a 6" driver bit:  stuffed them with eggcrate insulation (not shown) and hooked the wires up and screwed in the drivers.   pardon the dust and exposed wires...took the pic before I cleaned up they sound AMAZING!! before setting them up as atmos I played them as 2 channel ...and wow these would rival MANY main speakers costing 3-4x's more...not bad for 160$ each  very very excited...next step building 1099's for mains |

Oh man.. you're gonna love the 1099's.
I want to do some volt 8's for my surrounds. And possibly a pair of the new mbm's.

DIY isn't for everyone, but for those that enjoy the work and the rewarding satisfaction, it's addictive! I've built two Bill Fitzmaurice subwoofers and will look seriously at building some Volts or other DIY Atmos speakers when I get back into my Home Theater build.
As a side note, I was originally concerned about timbre matching the Atmos speakers with my mains and surrounds, but I'm becoming less concerned. What's been your experiences?

Timbre matching imho for HT is essential for front three and bed surrounds. Not AS important for atmos. But the coax in the volts is very close to the psa horn (will be moot soon once I do to the 1099's. They will Be identical timbre) |

The cavities between the ceiling joists are filled with pipes etc. so I couldn't do flush mounted. Otherwise the volts can be used without building the box and using joist cavity as ib |

Think they'll make good surrounds? I was gonna do v8 or v10 but like the size and price better on these guys.. do they "disperse" the sound well or are they a very direct speaker? I currently have bipole/dipole surrounds and like the dispersion of them.

If this helps. I am going with 4 volt 8's for surrounds The 6's from everything I read sent much different in any aspect except size. So yes they will do extremely well as surrounds. They gave a 90 degree dispersion and are only down a single db up to 130 degrees. Very wide! |
