I was reading 3" on sides, but that seems pretty excessive. I've seen several people just stack them one atop another. I'm only curious because I'm thinking about building an in-wall AV rack and I just don't have enough room to do 3" all on sides.

I would say 2" is fine. Air needs to circulate. Personally I think it is best for each component to have its own shelf when possible

If you have reduced space, you may want to look at some of the rack mountable fans to help circulate air.

I plan on having a shelf for each component but im just trying to fit as much as many components as possible. The space can only be 24"w × 30"h.

Width is not so important if the front and rear are open as, in general, Emotiva power amplifiers, the items that generate the most heat, are vented top and bottom. With a rack open on 3 sides (not rear) I have tested an XPA-2, XPA-3, XPA-5 and XPA-1L's and spacing greater than 50 mm didn't make any difference to the heatsink temperature.
Cheers Gary

Started off at 100 mm spacing and kept reducing it until the temperature increased, no change (increase) till I got to 50 mm. For sure the XPA-1L's run a bit hotter than the XPA-2/3/5, but using shelf spacing over 50 mm didn't change that. I have moved the XPA-1L's to be closer to the FR and FL speakers, to facilitate short speaker cables. At the moment they sit side by side with about 50 mm clear space on the outer sides and at the rear. There's 150 mm clear space to the XPA-100 on the glass shelf above, which also has 150 mm to the shelf above it with the centre speaker on it. That height combo puts the centre speaker at ear level. I should post up a photo shouldn't I Cheers Gary

My adcom gfa-5300 is really the only thing that runs hot(or warm). It's powering my emo uac-8.2 ceiling. The xpa5 hasn't ever even been warm(at least that I can remember). My Klipsch are super sensitive so it's probably barely doing anything.
Edit: My xbox 360 runs hot as well.
