Yeah, yeah...I know...here comes Mark AGAIN asking for advice on a new toy...
So, here's the deal, Mrs. KlineMJ and I have had Nexus 10 tablets since they first came out. We have really liked them for casual web surfing around the house or when we are traveling. In fact, we hardly ever use our home PC's anymore - other than 1 is used for Dirac and streaming to the HTPC, one is used when I pay bills or need to do a lot of writing, and one my son uses for gaming.
My wife also uses her tablet to stream movies (via Netflix/etc.) or watch soccer games at home or while at work.
Both tablets are starting to have issues...mainly hers as it has really struggled to keep a charge. So, we're thinking it's time to move on to something new for her at least.
So, here are the ground-rules for her new tablet: 1) It MUST be an Android...no Apple products allowed. (Sorry, she once got an iPhone against my reco and she hated it and took it back within 2 days. In that 2 days, I suffered unbelievable griping and did my best to not say "I told you so". So...don't even bother mentioning how much you like your iPad or whatever...she HATES the OS and will not even try to learn it. So, I don't care how much you like yours, you don't have to live with Mrs. KlineMJ and hear her complaining how much she hates it.) 2) It must be a 10" model...she'd be interested in a new Nexus 10 if it met #3, below. But, alas...they don't make a 10 anymore and the old one does not meet #3. 3) It must be able to use Wireless AC. 4) Camera function not important at all. 5) It will not be linked to our Verizon data plan, so wifi-only.
In a brief look this AM, it appears that anything in the Lenovo line starting with the Yoga Tab 3 Pro 10 or higher meets the above, but anything starting with the Yoga Tab 2 Pro 10 or lower does not.
The Galaxy S2 looks pretty good also.
Any thoughts on the Lenovo or Galaxy lines or other Android options?
Thanks! (PS - when my tablet finally bites it, I am considering a Microsoft Surface...but, that is not an option for her...she hates Windows also...see above "hates Apple OS" comments...same type of fervent hate for her...)
Mark

Samsung makes great hardware but their custom versions of Android are so full of bloatware and, I find, offer an overly complicated interface. I'm an apple fan for computers but absolutely love Android for mobile/tablets so I highly recommend you consider a device running pure or stock Android. I realize the Nexus hardware choices are few but having that pure experience is really a luxury. I have a Nexus 7 (2013 model) that is still lightning fast. Currently, only the Nexus 9 is available from Google but it's a really nice tablet. The Nexus 7 is still available from Newegg although it is no longer being manufactured. www.google.com/nexus/9/www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231150&cm_re=nexus_7-_-34-231-150-_-Product

Mark, how do you feel about Apple? I think his ground-rule #1 may have a hint about Apple: 1) It MUST be an Android...no Apple products allowed.

A few years ago I got my wife one of the first Samsung Galaxy Note with a quad core processor and 2GB RAM. It was expensive (just shy of $400 for the 8" version), but it is still as zippy as it was when new.
It has gone through multiple Android updates without an itch and battery life is still very good.
It is true that the Touchwiz interface is a bit overdone and Samsung stuffed it with a lot of unnecessary apps, but some of them can be removed or rolled back to the original version (which is typically smaller) and then disabled.
Based on my positive experience, one of the latest Samsung Galaxy has my vote.
As with everything that has to do with computing, buy the most capable hardware you can afford.

PC guy here but I see many advantages of becoming an Applehead. Best Buy has $100 off the Samsung tablets. Funny I had the Apply 5G phone and switched to a Samsung Note 6. I like the Apple better, Easier to use. Better updates , I do not like the Samsung message retrival at all. Apple is better and Apple ear speaker for phone calls is less ringy. Probably moving back to a Apple 6S

I know what you mean about the pure droid OS...we have loved our Nexus 10's. She would buy another if it were redone and had wireless AC. I will take a look at a 9 in person, but I think once she had has the large screen, she won't want to go back. Mark

Yeah, yeah...I know...here comes Mark AGAIN asking for advice on a new toy... Yes, that was my first thought , but I still glean the threads for info, thanks and I don't contribute to these threads very often but I do enjoy reading the different perspectives from other members. Keep asking Mark - its how we learn about things we might be interested in buying some day. Personally I'll probably never buy a tablet (thought about one for the 'library') but my daughter has expressed interest in one - she's good about dropping hints as Christmas nears. Silly me - I saw here cellphone and thought it was a tablet. Edit: FWIW Mark the Android operating system is based on Linux - that may help in your search. I don't know if any manufacturers advertise them as Linux based - you never know.

Mark the wife and I both have Samsung Galaxy Note pro 12.2's. Use them for Harmony remote functions, Web, email, gaming (apps) and chromecast control.
They are big and I love it!
Good luck and Happy hunting.

A happy wife is a HIGHLY desired condition. You're a wise man to remember that, Mr. K. Although I can't help with your Android quest, I wish you (and Mrs. K) best of luck!

These check all your boxes:
Dell Venue 10 Sony Xperia Z4 LG G Pad II/X 10.1 Amazon Fire HD 10
The last uses Amazon's unique version of Android, which will be a pro/con depending on how heavily you are already linked to their services.

It does not appear the LG is available yet, but it should be very soon. If the price I saw from it being on sale in another country holds (around $365), it looks like a very good unit.
It looks like Mrs. KlineMJ's old Nexus will work as long as it is plugged in. The battery is no longer holding any significant charge.
