Okay I have made my decision on the amp to use with the Marantz receiver, but before I purchase it and to make sure the amp will work properly with the receiver. I read in the spec's in the manual the Marantz analog output is 1.2 on the output gain and the XPA-5 is much higher, will this be a problem and will it effect the performance in any way? The reason I am buying the amplifier is the Marantz receiver will not adequately power my Martin Logan's and the extra power is what I need to my them sing. My only concern is that they are the right match, I don't want to by the amp and have to send it back if the don't work together. Any help on this matter would greatly appreciated.

Your marantz should be just fine driving the xpa-5. Emo amps are still fairly high gain at 29db. If I recall, xpa amps are designed to be driven to full power with 1.0 v rms.

Thanks for the input guys, I try not to over analyze on these things, but I want to make the proper choice the first time. I also noticed the XPA-5 is on back order, wondering if I should just get the XPA-3 for the front channels seeing that it is in stock. Any thoughts between the two?

According to the Emotiva website, the XPA-5 will "Ship On Or Before December 8". If I were you, I'd wait for the XPA-5.

No HT system should be without a XPA-5! Patience really is a virtue!

Thanks for the input, I will wait a get the XPA-5 to drive my L/C/R and surrounds. To say I'm excited is a understatement. I do have one last concern about the physical size of the amp, I have a Mid Atlantic audio rack in our cabinet, it's shelf dimensions are 17 1/2 wide by 16 1/2 deep. I noticed that the XPA-5 in 19 inches deep, can any tell me what the dimensions are from the faceplate to the back feet is. I need it to be less than 16 1/2 for the amp to work. Thanks in advance.

I went to the resources page and it was test specs for the amp, when I downloaded the manual it says the depth of the amp 19 inces which includes speaker terminals. I no one can answer I will call the factory tomorrow and maybe the can help.

Great news!!! Thanks for the help on the measurements and finally looking forward to getting the amp into my system. I've got a lot of movies to catch up on. As soon as I get the amp installed I will post my thoughts, I'm sure it will be positive!!!

Choosing 3 or 5 just depends how many channels you need, what speakers you have for front three, and rears, what AVR you have.
ie if you have easy to drive, efficent side & rears, but very hard to drive inefficient front three, then go for a XPA3 then use your AVR for side & rears.
If all speakers are hard to drive and inefficient get a XPA5 or XPA7, or a XPA 5 + 2
I have amps of another brand, a three channel and a four channel.
As for gain, 29db is THX standard. The ones I have are 34dB. I believe higher gain means it's more suited to avr with poor quality pre-outs, can't output much voltage.
I also chose the 3 channel as when listening to stereo I don't have lots of idle channels using power (amp is switched off) plus when I watch old movies like westerns I just use front three (mono or logic 7 mono)

It routes the unused power to the front channels which use it. For instance the XPA-5 gets close to the power of the XPA-2 when only two channels are being used. I think it's something like 350 watts per channel or something like that? This is due to its large power supply. The XPA-3 and 5 are both good choices.

Actually they do. Otherwise a 7ch power amp at idle wouldn't use any power, but it does.
It's not class A, so not like using 2000W "idle" as it's class AB- but it would be a certain amount. That's why I liked to use a 2 channel amp for L/R, then more amps for the remaining channels.
ie if you have a 11 channel power amp but you listen to 2 channel as well, just seems pointless having all those other channels powered up, and using some idle power.
