I found this an interesting article regarding a different type of tube buffer.
The gist of the article regards a tube buffer that provides gain and then attenuates the added gain so it still functions as a buffer. It adds 2nd order distortion to the signal for that "tube sound".
I assign no merit to this concept. I just think it's interesting and would love to hear one in use.
