I currently have a pair of Magnepan 1.7's and are running them with a single XPA 5, Gen 1. I am thinking of puchasing a pair of XPA 1'S. Will the sound dramatically improve by adding the mono blocks? Thanks for any advice.

I have XPA-1s. The sound can be a decent improvement. Biggest stregnth is that it is very good at doing room acoustics. You can feel the bigness of a hall and where the singers and instruments are inside it. But at that level, a lot of things have to also be right like speaker positioning, some mild room treatment, and a good DAC and maybe a preamp to get the benefit. So I can't guarantee you'll hear the difference.

Maggies are an easy 4 Ohm load. You may notice some more authority (more control of the bass) but I wouldn't expect much. Extra class A and a different designed amplifer would be where the difference will be, extra power (wattage) not so much.

Thanks for any advice. Mike It would be unlikely you'd hear any difference at all, never mind a dramatic difference. Monoblocks are great for unsubstantiated bragging rights for those who don't know better. Screw you, Secret Monoblock Society!

Hey maybe Monoblocks aren't the right amps for everybody but I gotta say something... All kidding aside, Nick is a very good guy and always willing to help with anything on the boards or emo related. Saying screw you is just unwarranted and rude. Personally I prefer Monoblocks but I'm not gonna say something mean spirited to those who enjoy their stereo amps. It's the holidays. Tidings of comfort and joy.

But what does Nick have to do with the secret monoblock society, that can neither be confirmed or denied as existing?!

If we could please get back on the topic. I'm asking if it's worth buying the XPA 1's to power my maggies, or just keep them running with my XPA 5? Thank you guys.

There is the test drive,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 30 day return period. Period! Small price to pay, relatively speaking. And there on sale. Good luck with your decision.
