While searching for larger in-wall speakers to complete a basement theater project I happened across these speakers: www.htd.com/Products/Versa-Cabinet-Speakers/VERSA-HTS1Anyone have any experience with these speakers or HTD in general? Any thoughts? Given the low cost I am tempted to try a pair. Any other in-wall options to consider in the $500-$1K per speaker range? (I recently set up an Atmos 5.2.4 in wall/ceiling system for a friend based on Axiom m-22s in-walls as mains and I really like the sound for movies - However I think the m-22s may be a little small for the space I want to fill: Axiom m-22) All thoughts appreciated.

Tricky category in my opinion. When you go in wall, you're using the cavity space as your enclosure for the most part.
The ones you listed are ON wall and will probably sound better than most in walls I've heard. Not to say there isn't something out there that is excellent but it depends on whether they sound good to YOU or not.
I've sampled in walls from a few companies like Polk and Paradigm. I was surprised at how good the Polk in walls were. (8" woofs) The Pardigm models were a lot more expensive but sounded hollow and flat to me.
I have a pair of Triad Bronze ON walls I'll be hooking up this week. They are very low profile and fairly hefty and well built. I expect they'll perform very well for surrounds. But again, I could never see using them as LCR unless I was ok with the change in sound. It's hard to go from good towers and a solid matching center to in or on walls though, to be fair. Scott

I think Thiel in walls are fantastic, but you have to buy them second hand. Very well built and I find them to sound great paired with quality subwoofer.

Looks like the Thiels are too small for your consideration though.

I'm running the HTD Versa-1 you are looking at. I have 5 of them and paired them with 2 Martin Logan Dynamo 700w wireless subs. These are powerd by Emotiva XPA5 and UMC200. My wife and I are very satisfied with the sound of this setup. The really nice thing about these speakers is the ability to customize them. You can have the end caps painted and the socks made in any color you want. For me with these being in the living room the WAF was a must. She loves them!
