I'm not sure what's going on but I recently bought an inexpensive Sony BDP-S3500 that supports Netflix and Amazon streaming with sound output for Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. So I have the device connected to my UMC-200 via an HDMI cable, but when I set the Netflix sound to stream 5.1, on the UMC-200 side it shows DD+ but there is no sound.
I also have a Chromecast plugged directly into the UMC-200, and if I cast Netflix streaming to it, and select the 5.1 sound in the Netflix app, the same things happens - the UMC-200 shows DD+ but there is not sound. In both cases if I deselect the 5.1 sound in the Netflix app and just select the regular 'English' sound (which I guess just outputs stereo), then the sound works - however it's not in 5.1 and the only available options on the UMC-200 at that point are all non-dolby options.
So, I suspect there is something wrong with my UMC-200 settings, but am not sure. From the UMC-200 I have an HDMI cable to a Samsung TV.
If I play a Blu-Ray disc on the Sony BDP-S3500 then everything works perfectly. It's only the streaming that can't seem to enable the DD+ 5.1 through the UMC-200.
Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, BTW when I try this with the Amazon Prime streaming app on the Sony or the Chromecast, the same behavior happens - no DD+ 5.1 sound through the UMC.

Hi Brian ; the 200 has both menu :mode and separate menu:setup:playback menus to assign decoders and also to assign your default for signal types like lpcm;dd;dts etc . Double check these arent downmixing to stereo . The manual is quite poor so you may have to go digging in the menu's .. Sometimes dd codec signals give hdmi handshake problems [rarely] so flicking to dd+pl2x and back can help latching on too.Hope its something simple like this

I've checked the setup menu on the UMC 200 and there is no problem there. When it plays DD+ from Netflix it shows a DD+ on the UMC-200 but there is just no sound. So I think there is some incompatibility or something from the Netflix app on the Blu Ray player. For some reason the Chromecast doesn't work for DD+ either so there could be some incompatibility there too. If I hook up my iPad 2 with an HDMI cable directly to the UMC 200 and play Netflix from there the DD+ works fine.

Just to rule out the hdmi inputs your bd player and chromecast are plugged into ; switch the chromecast to the input your ipad works ok on ; that will rule out the decoding path . To rule out your sony you could bitstream the dd+ over its sp/dif out ; it should come out as 640kbps dolby digital as thats the maximum bandwidth it can handle May have something to do with your streaming bandwidth ; someone else with netflix may give some insight hopefully ; down here in Aus our download speeds arent crash hot at all

I'm thrilled to have resolved the problem by reinstalling all the software/firmware on the UMC-200. Thank God I had an old Windows XP laptop lying around (that actually still worked) to do the reinstall with, as I had switched to Macs a few years ago. - Brian

Everything else worked perfectly, it appears that sometime only a small, isolated portion of the firmware gets corrupted. Luckily the software for the 8100 works under Windows 7, so it was an easy process.
