Listening room - 10' by 11' carpeted.
Old equipment - pre. Adcom 565 pwr. Adcom 565 spk. Carver amazing Phase technology cdp. Nad 5000
New equipment - pre. Mcintosh c50 pwr. Emotiva xpa1 cdp. Emotiva Erc3 This newer system sounds as bad as the olds system (harsh) as in the amps are clipping and there in no real base response. The speakers are wired in phase and there is no difference when I swap out speakers. Any ideas as to where to look for problems wil be appreciated.

It's extremely hard to get good sound from a room thats is pretty close to square. Any room treatment in the room at all? How far from the wall is your chair/seat? Are your speakers front/rear ported? How fat from the wall are they?

kaiju , it could be that you have a null or peak at the listening position. Being almost a cuboid shape, this is the worst room for music (dimensionally). I just assumed the room height is 9 feet and crunched some numbers. Below are your room's axial modes. Click each image below. Length is in blue, Width in black and Height in red. Basically, look for an even spacing between the vertical bars. If close together, they reinforce and if far apart, they cancel, neither is really good for music. That said, I only spotted one such occurrence, around 450 Hz. However, this is a small room. Do you have any room treatments?

My understanding is that the carver amazing speakers are extremely picky when it comes to placement. Do you have enough space between them and the back wall?

What Phase Tech speakers are you using; PC, Theatro, dARTS? What are your walls and ceiling made of; do you have; exposed concrete, drywall, other?

Look at the pre-amps equalizer settings. If I read your post correctly, it sounds just as bad with both sets of speakers. I would say check out the pr-eamp first

Going another direction, what music are you listening to and how loud?
Bad recordings = bad sound.

The operating word is "could". Sure any room can be improved. However a room with the same (or almost) dimensions in each direction is not ideal.

Without measurements all you can hope for is guessing. With the amount of money you have in equipment it would be worth the extra $100 to get a measurement microphone and learn how to take some basic measurements with room eq wizard

My understanding is that the carver amazing speakers are extremely picky when it comes to placement. Do you have enough space between them and the back wall? I still have a pair of old B&W DM2a speakers around, gathering a bit of dust. 1973 vintage, 3-way with front "slot", transmission line design. I was looking around for new speakers about a dozen years later and decided to do some experiments in speaker placement. I was at that time in a small townhouse, living room continuous with dining room. Originally the speakers (on "stands") were along the long continuous wall (several feet out), and they sounded "ok". Moved 90 degrees right so as to separate the living and dining rooms (lots of space around the speakers), not actually a whole lot different. Moved 90 degrees left instead so they were directly in front of the living room curtains and they were dead as a doornail. Really horrible flat sound. Moved 180 degrees instead so as to be at the entrance to the living room, with the walkway and stairs to upstairs behind them (say 6 feet easily) and they were a total miracle! I couldn't believe how good they sounded, crystal clear and alive, wow! Does placement matter? Woo hoo!
