I have been increasingly frustrated with maintaining my headless music server. I had built it based off of the designs in Computer Audiophile. It had Windows 7 Pro with J. River Media Center. I just had lots of little issues. The last straw came recently when I received my new DAC. For the life of me I could not get the dac to work on USB and I tried many things and even a couple of computers. Both with Windows 7 Pro, 32-Bit. J. river worked great for me, but the Windows issues just kept on mounting. So i went back looking for another solution.
I had tested Daphile a couple of years ago when it was in Beta. At the time it didn't support Trim so i decided to go the Windows route. This is a very simple dedicated music server to be loaded on your own hardware. To say that it is easy to install and use is an understatement. It is built off of Logitech SqueezeServer and is administered through a webpage.
If you are looking for an easy to use music server system this works great. It can be controlled by any software that controls Squeezebox like iPeng or Logutech's own app. Another nice feature is that when you copy files to it, the SqueezeServer automatically adds them to the system. Also hardware squeezeboxes can be connected and use the same database,
Again this is a whole dedicated operating system and it is headless. It is not operational locally at the server.
It is also very small. It can be run from a USB thumb drive.
