I am an avid taper (cassettes and reel-to-reel). So far reasonably happy using the XMC-1 for this, though I cannot figure out how to monitor the tape loop while recording. The bottom line requirement is to be able to listen to the output of the tape loop (the signal coming back from the recorder) while it is recording a source. This is helpful if you are using a three-head tape deck that allows that, so you can compare the input signal to the recorded one. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hmmm, If I get this right it is about confidence monitoring of the recording vs. the source. That being said, easiest way would be too connect the output of the said 3 head recorder out to any line input of the XMC-1, and toggle from the deck source/tape monitoring from the tape deck. As there is no dedicated Tape Loop per se on the XMC-1. It is probably the easiest without getting messy taking up 2 inputs to toggle from recording input to playback output. Myself I used a dedicated headphone stage from right out of the Recorder output to drive my Sennheiser or AKG headphones for accurate tape monitoring. Far more accurate, and easier for me to see how it is going on tape. My decks allowed me to go RCA out to the headphone amp, and the Balanced to my Mixer, or Preamplifier which also had a Headphone amp too of course, but my dedicated Headphone Amp I got later was more accurate. For example my Tascam 52 Omega loop 2 track allowed me to run Balanced and Unbalanced outs, as did my Tascam 122 mk.3 Cassette deck. I miss mostly my Tandberg TCD-3014 Cassette deck, and the Otari MX-5050 mk.2 in my project studio. Wow those decks were magic.

Plug a pair of 'Y' adapter cables into the audio output (preamp out) of the machine that is playing the tape and plug one side into the XMC-1 and the other side to the tape machine where you are recording to. Easy Peasy!

Plug a pair of 'Y' adapter cables into the audio output (preamp out) of the machine that is playing the tape and plug one side into the XMC-1 and the other side to the tape machine where you are recording to. Easy Peasy! Well, not that easy though. If I use a y adapter and attempt to monitor that copy of the signal through the XMC-1, the pre will start sending that new signal to the tape out (i.e., silence), because the tape out is not selectable. At that point I would be recording silence, not the goal . But your suggestion motivated me to look at another option. I can create the equivalent of a selectable tape out by using the zone 2 out and finding an appropriate fixed volume level (for zone 2) that will keep the tape decks happy. I can then monitor the tape in easily in what ever input the deck switcher is connected to (I have multiple tape decks and use a switcher). Will give this a try later today. This makes the XMC-1 "tape deck unfriendly" for the few recording geeks out there, but I suspect it could be easily fixed in a future firmware update. Thanks, N
