When a TV passes its audio out via its optical-out jack, is the TV just passing the incoming digital signal untouched so that outboard surround processors will do the actual work of surround decoding? If so wouldn't this be just as good as using one HDMI cable to the TV for video, and one HDMI cable to the surround processor for sound? I believe ARC was supposed to also solve this problem but tends to also cause problems. Of course, if the TV is mucking with the audio, then not so good. Also, if there is more likelihood of getting picture and sound out of synch going through the TV then not so good. This question may be too simplistic if TVs do different things depending on the model, but...I was wondering if there is a general consensus.

Most sets output 2ch PCM out but there is no standard so check your manual.

Plugging the optical cable into my DC-1 works on the optical input so it must be 2-channel only. Now that I think about it, even if the optical out of the TV was 5.1 it probably would not be the more modern hi-rez versions, so still best to avoid using the TV's optical out when possible. Back to your regularly scheduled program ....

Not saying their aren't TV's out there that pass the 5.1 signal, but MANY (if not most) only pass 2.0. Hence why if one is using a 5.1 decoding soundbar, the Toslink Optical cable needs to run from your Cable or DirecTV box to the soundbar, not from the TV to the soundbar. Even the brand new top dog $6000 LG 65" OLED has this limitation, as does my 2-1/2 year old top dog Panny ZT.

My Sammy outputs DD 5.1 via optical to my UMC-200. All of my TV viewing is OTA. Remember, the DC-1 is a 2 channel DAC...no 5.1 input/output.

I have an old Vizio 42" 720p and I got 5.1 out of the optical output.
Now I am using an external HDTV tuner and can do the same thing.
